Stoughton Fire Department Helps to Deliver Baby Boy

The baby boy was born in a Stoughton Fire Department ambulance on the way to the hospital shortly before 7 p.m. on July 31. There were no complications during the birth.

The helped to deliver a healthy baby boy Tuesday night.

The baby was born at 6:43 p.m. on July 31 in a SFD ambulance just as it was passing the RK shopping plaza on Park St. in Stoughton, right on the Brockton line, according to Brian Harkins of the SFD.

The ambulance was en route to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton where hospital staff met the mother, baby and SFD upon arrival. There were no complications during the birth, according to Scott Mellyn of the Stoughton Fire Department.

Mellyn said the baby started crying immediately when he was born.

"That sound was wonderful for all to hear," Mellyn said, adding that the mother was "doing fantastic."

A woman who was 37 weeks pregnant called the Stoughton Fire Department at 6:27 p.m. on Tuesday saying she felt as if she was going into labor and delivery was imminent. Her due date was August 23, but it was not a false alarm - 16 minutes after the SFD was dispatched to her residence in the west Stoughton area, she gave birth, just before arriving at the hospital in the ambulance.

Group 4 from the Stoughton Fire Department responded to the call and assisted in the delivery. Mellyn, Harkins and Greg Bourget were on the ambulance, with Eric Hoffman driving the ambulance. Paramedic student Kyle O'Brien also assisted, as did Jeff Ledin of the SFD.

Mellyn said it was a "team effort."

Calls like this don't happen all the time. Mellyn said the last time he took part in a delivery while on call was 12 years ago.

Stoughton Patch would love to interview the mom and/or family about the experience. Anyone with additional information can email jeffrey.pickette@patch.com.
