Stoughton Fire Department Blizzard Cleanup Advisory: "Help Us Keep You Safe!"

Post-blizzard cleanup tips from the Stoughton Fire Department to possibly prevent an emergency from happening or in the event of an emergency, allow first responders to respond in a timely manner.

The following is from Stoughton Deputy Fire Chief Greg Goldberg:

As you are digging out from "NEMO" , The Stoughton Fire Department would like all businesses and the residents to please try to follow a few safety tips that will possibly prevent an emergency from happening or in the event of an emergency, "Help us help you"!

For Residents:

* Please Clear Fire Hydrants 4 feet on all sides

  • In the event of a Fire, this will expedite the process of ensuring that we get water on the fire

* Shovel out All exits

  • Gives occupants multiple escape routes in the event of a fire or other emergency!
  • Will assist in the rapid treatment & transport of medical emergency patients

* Clear all outside appliance/heating vents

  • Power vents & side vents from heaters & hot water heaters
  • Gas powered appliance vents

* Clear outside Gas Meters

  • As the snow melts, if ice forms over the meter it could cause a gas leak

* Clear out your car's exhaust pipe 

For Apartment Complexes & Businesses:

 

* Please Clear Fire Hydrants 4 feet on all sides

  • In the event of a Fire, this will expedite the process of ensuring that we get water on the fire

* Shovel out All exits

  • Make sure ALL EXITS are cleared including those generally not used as they, by law must be kept clear at ALL Times, ensuring means of egress
  • Will assist in the rapid treatment & transport of medical emergency patients

* In Buildings Protected with Sprinkler Systems

  • Shovel Out Sprinkler Connections & Valves

* Access to Fire Alarm Panel

* Clear all outside appliance/heating vents

  • Power vents & side vents from heaters & hot water heaters
  • Gas powered appliance vents

* Clear outside Gas Meters

  • As the snow melts, if ice forms over the meter it could cause a gas leak

Also, Please do not forget your neighbors! There are many elderly and handicapped persons who will have a more difficult time managing the effects of the storm! Check in on them and assist in any way possible with these safety measures!
