Flatbed Truck Crashes into Woods on Route 138 in Stoughton, Leaks Diesel Fuel

There were no injuries in the near-collision between a landscaping truck and a flatbed truck Monday morning in Stoughton, but 50 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the flatbed truck.

In trying to avoid a collision with a landscaping truck pulling out of a nearby parking lot, a flatbed truck ended up crashing into a wooded area on Route 138 in Stoughton Monday morning near the Easton line.

The drivers of both vehicles were not transported for medical reasons, according to Stoughton Deputy Fire Chief Greg Goldberg, but about 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the flatbed truck and into the woods. There is also a possibility hydraulic fluid leaked from the flatbed truck as well, Goldberg said.

Around 11:17 a.m., a flatbed truck (from A.A. Wills Material Corp.) was traveling on Route 138 South. A truck from Romeiro's Landscaping was turning out of its parking lot, located next to the Planet Fitness Plaza on Route 138.

In an effort to avoid colliding with the landscaping truck, the flatbed truck, already traveling on the road, swerved and ended up crashing into a wooded area at 1823 Washington St. on the southbound side of the road, according to Stoughton Police and Fire officials on scene.

Fuel leaked into the woods, but did not spill onto the roadway.

The flatbed truck received extensive damage. Goldberg said it had a full load of bricks, rocks and other masonry supplies.

Before the truck, which was still upright, but leaning against trees and brush, could be removed, the materials from the truck had to be removed, Goldberg said.

Officials were on scene for the better part of Monday afternoon clearing the accident site. The southbound side of 138 was partially blocked off during this process, but the impact on traffic in the area was minimal.

In addition to the Stoughton Police Department and Stoughton Fire Department, James Conlon, the Town's Environmental Affairs Officer, the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection and the Mass. Highway Department were also on scene.
