Car Chase Ends in Car Crash in Stoughton

A vehicle that failed to stop on West St. in Randolph on Tuesday led police on a short car chase that ended in Stoughton and tied up morning traffic on Route 24 Northbound.

According to Stoughton and Randolph Police, whose departments both responded to the scene, a car failed to stop on West St. at 4:30 a.m., roughly behind the Randolph Showcase Cinemas, and led Randolph police on a short car chase which ended when the car crashed at the dead end of Willow St. in Stoughton.

The suspect, a male wearing a brown jacket, jumped out of the car and took off on foot, into the woods, according to Randolph Police Lt. Robert Emerson. He said the suspect was still at large.

Emerson said the car was stolen out of Dorchester.

Police set up a perimeter on the highway (Route 24 North) near the Route 139 interchange for approximately two hours following the Willow St. crash.

The wooded area behind the section of Willow St. where the chase and ensuing crash occurred borders Route 24 North.

As a result, traffic was tied up during the start of the morning commute. WBZ-TV reported a six-mile backup on Route 24 North.

Sgt. Paul Williams of the said the traffic backup was the result of “rubbernecking,” essentially, the “curiosity factor.”
