An alleged drunk driver crashed his car into a pole on Gay St. in Stoughton late Sunday night, around 10:45, bringing down the pole and knocking out power in the area.
The vehicle crashed into a pole, snapping it at the base, before the vehicle came to a rest against a tree 30 or 40 feet away from the pole, Greg Bourget of the Stoughton Fire Department said.
The pole brought wires down, causing a power outage in the area, Bourget said. Power has since been restored.
Bryan Packard, 32, of Manor Dr. in Stoughton, was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, operating negligently to endanger, a marked lanes violation, and for the unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, according to an entry in the Stoughton Police log.
There was only one occupant in the vehicle (Packard), Bourget said, and he was transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton.
The crash happened near Gay Street's intersection with Washington Street, across from Meads Meadow. The crash also heavily damaged a fence which separates Gay Street from the edge of the Evergreen Cemetery.
