Stoughton Obituaries (Week of July 23)

The following are obituaries for Stoughton residents or those with Stoughton ties for the week of July 23: Alva Louise (Hipson) Hoadley; Thelma N. "Sis" (Vandersnoek) Walsh; Joseph A. Petrucci; Sarah Gleek; and Eleanor M. Mahoney.

Alva Louise (Hipson) Hoadley

Alva Louise (Hipson) Hoadley, a longtime resident of Stoughton, passed away after a period of failing health on Monday July 23, 2012. She was 86 years old and the beloved wife of the late Melvin R. Hoadley.

Born April 26, 1926 in Boston, she was a daughter to the late Athelston Y. and Eva E. Hipson. Alva was a graduate of Hyde Park High School. She married her late husband in 1949, resided in Dorchester and later moved to Stoughton in 1954. Mrs. Hoadley was employed by the Masoneilan Company in Avon, MA for over 17 years. She retired in 1996.

Her survivors include her son Wayne of Stoughton, a daughter Lynne and her husband Tim Farina of Carver, her son Alan and his wife Donna also of Stoughton, three grandsons Eric, Jason and David, two nieces and a nephew.

Alva enjoyed all of her summers with her family and friends at her cottage on Long Pond in Lakeville, Massachusetts. She also took numerous ocean cruises with her late sister Marie Wilson. Destinations included the Caribbean, a Panama Canal Passage and a voyage on the Queen Mary II.

Alva was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

Her funeral service was held on July 26 from the Sheehan Funeral Home in Stoughton, with Reverend Rebecca L. Cho, officiating. Burial was at the Evergreen Cemetery in Stoughton.

Thelma N. “Sis” (Vandersnoek) Walsh

Thelma N. “Sis” (Vandersnoek) Walsh, a longtime resident of Stoughton, passed away after a long courageous battle with cancer on Saturday July 21, 2012. She was 76 years old and the beloved wife of the late Joseph P. Walsh.

Other survivors include her two daughters, Joanne M. Holmes and her husband Ronald Holmes Jr. of South Easton, Karen McKenna and her husband Dan McKenna of Bridgewater, her sister Rita Ladue of Jamaica Plain, her niece Janet Ladue and nephew Steven Ladue, grandchildren, Danielle and Patrick Kippenhan of South Easton, Kelley Walsh and Joseph McKenna of Bridgewater, her great-granddaughter Chloe Marie, and her three step-grandchildren, Ronny, Heather and Ashley Holmes. She was also a twin to her late brother Simon Vandersnoek.

Mrs. Walsh was born on June 8, 1936 in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. She was a loving daughter to the late Margaret M. (Gallivan) and Maurice Vandersnoek. She attended Boston Public Schools.

Thelma was a dedicated homemaker/housewife and mother. Her hobbies included shopping and spending quality time with her family and friends. ”Sis” was also a communicant and attended the Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton.

Her funeral mass was held on July 25, 2012 from the Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton, with Rev. Joseph P. McDermott officiating. Burial was at the MA National Veterans Cemetery in Bourne.

Joseph A. Petrucci

Joseph A. Petrucci, 70, of Stoughton, died Saturday, July 21, 2012, at the home of his daughter, under the care of Steward Hospice.

Born in Readville, he was a graduate of Boston Schools, and also attended Newbury College. Mr. Petrucci was a Veteran of the United States Navy. He worked for Poirier Sales in Norwood for over 50 years, retiring in April as the Vice President of Sales and Board of Directors. He was a member of the Lions Club of Westwood and of the Bocce Club in Hyde Park. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his daughters and grandchildren.

Mr. Petrucci is survived by his 3 daughters; Cheryl A. Petrucci of Stoughton, AnneMarie Rivers of Bellingham and Jill Thrasher of Georgia. He was the grandfather of Brittany Thorburn, Caden Thrasher and Cole Thrasher and the brother of the late Virginia Poirier and James Petrucci. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews

Funeral was held from the Farley Funeral Home in Stoughton and was followed by a Funeral Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton. Burial took place at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.

Sarah Gleek

Sarah Gleek was born on September 7, 1920 and passed away on Monday, July 23, 2012. She was a resident of Stoughton at the time of her passing.

Beloved wife of the late Hyman Gleek. Devoted mother of Andrea Katz & her husband Norman Katz and Darrell Gleek. Cherished grandmother of Adam Katz, Michael Katz, Hayley Katz and Jesse Katz.

Graveside funeral services took place at Quincy Hebrew Cemetery in West Roxbuy.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to The Arc of the South Shore, 371 River Street, No. Weymouth, MA 02191.

Eleanor M. Mahoney

Eleanor M. Mahoney, 91, a lifelong resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 after a period of failing health. Born in Stoughton, she was raised and educated in Stoughton and was a graduate of St. Mary's Grammar School and St. John's High School in Canton.

Ms. Mahoney worked for many years at the District Court of Southern Norfolk County in Stoughton, retiring as the Assistant Clerk of Courts at age 65. She was a member of the Massachusetts Clerk of Courts Association. She was a longtime communicant and volunteer at the Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton. She also was a volunteer at the Stoughton Library. In her free time, Ms. Mahoney enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards, line dancing, watching the Red Sox, spending time with her family and going to lunch with her many loving friends.

She is survived by her brother John F. Mahoney Jr. and his wife Barbara of Dover NH and her sister Mary T. Ward of Stoughton. She was predeceased by her parents John F. Mahoney and Josephine M. (Cronage) Mahoney and her brother in law Richard Ward. She was the aunt of Kevin, Shaun, Dana, Brian and Linda Mahoney. She is survived by several great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the many loving and caring neighbors and friends who looked after Eleanor and enriched her life for so many years.

Funeral was held from the Farley Funeral Home in Stoughton, followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton. Interment took place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Stoughton.
