ABOUT TOWN: Stoughton's Mauriello Takes Part in Kids PMC; FinCom Members Honored (And More...)

KIDS PNC: On Sunday June 10, 10-year-old Austin Mauriello of Stoughton participated in the Kids Pan Mass Challenge ride in Sharon to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. 

Austin raised nearly $100 by building and selling bird houses to family, friends and teachers. 

Austin rode the 10K course (6.2 miles) in memory of his grandmother, Cheryl Mauriello, who passed away four years ago from Cancer. 

After his grandmother's passing, Austin's dad, Michael, participated in his first Pan Mass Challenge, riding the 90 miles from Wellesley to Cape Cod. 

Austin was inspired by his dad and last year participated in his first Kids PMC ride. Austin's Dad will be riding in his third Pan Mass Challenge in August.

THREE FINCOM MEMBERS HONORED FOR SERVICE: honored three individuals who served the full nine year limit on the town's Committee on Finance & Taxation at .

Chairwoman Holly Boykin, who is moving to Ohio, has served as Chair for the past several years. It's expected that her Vice Chair, Richard Hill (also from Pct. 2), will be elected the next Chairman of the powerful town committee.

Boykin, Ed DeFelice and Dave Mullen were each presented with the traditional FinCom gift, created by Moderator Howard Hansen in his print shop: a wall hanging with illustrations from each of the years they served.

They also received a citation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Interim Town Manager Joseph D. Feaster, Jr. made the presentations.  

Boykin, getting a bit emotional, said, "Stoughton is in my heart. My dad still lives here on Plain Street. It's been a great joy for me to serve on this Committee. I want to thank you all for your support. And, a thank you to the employees of the town, who have worked with me along the way."

DeFelice mentioned that it's been nearly 50 years since he graduated . The owner of Color It Green Landscaping added, "It's a lot of work. We've had outstanding leadership this past year. I'd like to thank all of you for putting up with me."

Mullen thanked the members of Precinct 1 for supporting him through all the years. He is employed at Hansen Bros. Printing. 

(I know just how much work that serving a full nine year term on the FinCom can be, since I did my time and have my gift hanging on my wall!)

STOYAC FUNDRAISER: STOYAC (Stoughton Youth Athletic Club) will be holding a STOYAC Softball Tournament fundraiser "Stoughton Summer Smacka" for girls in the 12-year-old and 14-year-old age groups on July 20-22 at the Softball Complex (West School Fields).

STOYAC is hosting 20 teams (space for two more teams) and the main sponsor is Reebok of Canton. STOYAC is looking for additional sponsors, donations, and volunteers to support the STOYAC program.

The STOYAC program includes youth programs in softball, basketball, football and cheerleading.

STOUGHTON LIBRARY TO HOST FILM PROGRAM:  The will present on Thursday, June 14 at 7 p.m.,  "From Silent Films to Sound: A Look at Movies of the 20th Century before Netflix, iPads, and Cable TV." 

A lifelong lover of film, Frank Mandosa has taught courses in cinema at Project Contemporary Competitiveness (PCC) and in the high school classroom.  Among his most gratifying moments are when his five and seven year olds repeatedly ask to watch silent movies on his iPhone and when his Netflix queue reached 250 titles! 

The Stoughton Public Library is located at 84 Park Street on Rt. 27.  Admission is free and there is plenty of free parking. For more information, call Josh at 781-344-2711.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: to Stoughton native Edward Bishop, a well-known boxer, and owner of Bishop's Training & Fitness.  He was a guest long ago on Snyder's Stoughton TV Program; and to the lovely Joanne Giannini, owner of Body Solutions Personal Training. The Stoughton native graduated from Simmons College.
