ABOUT TOWN: Remembering James Albert Callanan

CONDOLENCES FROM ABOUT TOWN: The founder of Stoughton's Christmas Parade has passed away. James Albert Callanan, died last Saturday at 82. He was the beloved husband of Evelyn (DeVito) Callanan for 58 years. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army from 1950-52.
Mr. Callanan worked as a grocer with several local businesses before assuming the ownership of the DeVito family business, Stoughton Variety in 1972, which he ran with his wife for 24 years, before retiring in 1997. Jim was a life member of the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Stoughton Historical Society.

While involved with the Chamber of Commerce, he began the Stoughton Christmas Parade, and was actively involved with that event for 16 years. He was named Man of the Year by the Chamber in 1991 and honored in 2008 as the Grand Marshall of the Christmas parade.
In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, making holiday decorations for his yard, gardening, and spending special time with his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his beloved daughters, Anne Klim and her husband Brian of Stoughton, Kathleen Babini and her husband Michael of Plymouth, Janice Byron and her husband Patrick of Stoughton and Beth McNamara and her husband James of Lakeville. He was also the proud grandfather of Sarah and Erin Klim, Nora Dolan and her husband Michael, Colleen, Sean and Mikaela Byron, and Kathryn, Mary, James, Daniel and Joanna McNamara as well as the cherished great-grandfather to James, David, Evelyn and Sophia.

Funeral will be held from the , 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Wednesday at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at , Stoughton at 10 a.m.. Visiting Hours are Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. Burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton. Donations in Jim’s Memory may be made to the James Callanan Memorial Music Scholarship at Stoughton High School, c/o Harbor One Credit Union, 95 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021.
PREVENTING CHILD ABUSE: April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and in recognition of this, announces its upcoming child sexual abuse prevention training on Sunday, April 10, 2011, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Parents, teachers, day care providers, coaches, clergy and other youth-serving professionals are encouraged to attend the three hour Stewards Of Children training. The session will take place at Ahavath Torah Congregation, 1179 Central Street in Stoughton.
Stewards of Children is a comprehensive sexual abuse prevention training program that educates adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Designed for organizations and individuals that serve children and adolescents, providing prevention training for staff, volunteers, parents, and other interested adults, Stewards of Children is the only 3rd party evaluated, evidence-based prevention program in the U.S. and was named the Crime Prevention Program of the Year in 2007 by the National Crime Prevention Council.
The training is led by an authorized facilitator. This training is being 100% funded by the Ahavath Torah Congregation Sisterhood child abuse prevention fund. I went through this training. It is eye-opening, and when you are done, you will look at situations quite differently with regards to your own children, and others children.
SHS TRACK BOYS COMPETE (from head coach Harvey Blonder): Alex Lorius, Marlon Crome and Nick Green represented Stoughton in the MSTCA pentathlon at Reggie Lewis Center. The top performer was Lorius who started the day with a personal best and state qualifying time in the hurdles. All competitors hurdled, long jumped, high jumped, threw the shot put and ran the 1000 meters.
