Stoughton Obituaries (January 26)

The following are obituaries for Stoughton residents or those with Stoughton ties for the week of January 20-26.

James E. "Jake" Hoffman

James E. "Jake" Hoffman, 21, died unexpectedly on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013 in Amherst, MA after being caught in an apartment fire.

He was the beloved son of David M. and Anne (Morrissey) Hoffman of Stoughton. Born in Stoughton, he was raised and educated in Stoughton and was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 2009.

In addition to his parents, Jake is survived by his sister Nichole C. Hoffman and his brother Riordan J. A. Hoffman both of Stoughton.

He was the grandson of Dorothy (Hannaway) Hoffman of Stoughton and the late Edward Hoffman, James J. Morrissey and Bernice (Hill) Morrissey. He was the great grandson of Edward C. Hoffman of Canton. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

While at Stoughton High, he was a member of the soccer team and was elected captain his senior year.

Jake was a senior at University of Massachusetts at Amherst at the time of his death. While at UMass, he was a member of MESIBA Team, the Club Managers Association of America and was the Vice President of the Jewish Student Union.

An avid sports fan, he was a kind and caring man who in his free time enjoyed fundraising for different foundations and donating his time to anyone who needed it.

Arrangements were handled by the Farley Funeral Home in Stoughton. Funeral Mass will be held at the St. James Church, 560 Page St. in Stoughton, on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m.

Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Stoughton.

Shirley Ann (Shepard) Paolillo

Shirley Ann (Shepard) Paolillo, 52, a resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at Brockton Hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 23 surrounded by her family.

She was the wife of Christopher P. Paolillo. Daughter of the late A.M. and Fumiko (Nagase) Shepard, she was born in Japan and resided in Stoughton since 1986.

Mrs. Paolillo earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Southern Illinois at Edwardsville and a Licensed Practical Nursing Degree from Southeastern Vocational Technical School. She was a nurse at the Braemoor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brockton for 10 years.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Paolillo is survived by her children, Erica A., Nicole H. and Benjamin P. Paolillo all of Stoughton. She was the sister of Suzan Mattioda of Fairview Heights, IL and the aunt of Allison Boyle of Pittsburgh, PA.

Funeral Service will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) in Stoughton on Monday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. Visiting Hours will be held prior from 9-11 a.m. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Stoughton.

Sylvia (Zimmerman) Katzoff

Sylvia (Zimmerman) Katzof, of Stoughton, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 23.

Devoted daughter of the late Ida & Michael Zimmerman. Loving mother of Ida “Lisa” Cattoggio & her husband Steve of Raynham and Elaine Katzoff of Stoughton. Cherished grandmother of Tyler Michael Cattoggio. Dear sister of Carl Zimmerman of FL, Richard Zimmerman of NH and the late Harvard Zimmerman and Janet Minsky. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Ms. Katzoff was retired as a teacher from the Boston Public Schools. She enjoyed spending time with her grandson and travelling.  

Service was held at the Schlossberg Solomon Memorial Chapelin Canton on  Friday, Jan. 25. Burial followed at Sharon Memorial Park.

Leonard W. "Lenny" Marenburg

Leonard W. "Lenny" Marenburg, of Stoughton, formerly of Randolph passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 23.

Beloved husband of the late Lilyan D. (Cohan). Loving father of Edward J. & Evanne Marenburg of Randolph and Amy C. & Marc Mekler of South Carolina, formerly of Randolph. Adored Papa of Randi, Jennifer, Steven & Brian and great grandpapa of Arianna Ashley and Natalia Marie. Dear brother of Marilyn Bernabei of Norton and the late Harold Marenburg.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside services at Sharon Memorial Park, 41 Dedham St. in Sharon on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 11:45 a.m. Arrangements by the Levine Chapels.

Kathleen A. "Kathy" Salemme

Kathleen A. "Kathy" Salemme, 51, a resident of Stoughton, died on Sunday, Jan. 20 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston after a long illness. She was the lifetime partner of James McDonald of Foxborough.

Born in Boston, Kathy was raised in Sharon and graduated from Sharon High School, Class of 1979. She resided in Stoughton for past 8 years. She was a homemaker.

Kathy was the beloved mother of Bianca L. McDonald of Stoughton and the cherished grandmother of Jayda Semler. She was the daughter of Alice K. McLaughlin of Westwood and Francis P. Salemme.

She was the sister of Susan Schein and her husband Jonathan of Braintree, Diane Allen of Boston, Stephen Salemme of Quincy and the late Frankie Salemme and the aunt of Ross and Max Allen of Boston. Kathy is also loved by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral Service was held at the Farley Funeral Home in Stoughton on Friday, Jan. 25

William J. Miller

William J. Miller, of Falmouth formerly of Dedham, died suddenly Jan. 22, 2013. He was a mechanic for the Wellesley Fire Department, having previously worked for the Stoughton and Westwood Fire Departments.

He was the beloved husband of Joanne McCarron and the late Eileen Miller. Devoted father of Janine M. Fox of Auburn, James M. Miller of Monson, Justin M. Miller of Sharon and Joseph M. Miller of Sharon. Grandfather of Miranda R. Fox of Falmouth. Also survived by many other grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Brother of Paul Romanelli of Norton, Rita Pagels of Attleboro, Joseph Miller of Middleboro, Elizabeth Pietro of Stoughton, Bruce Miller of Plymouth and the late Richard Romanelli and Allen Miller.

Funeral was held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St. in Dedham, Saturday morning, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary Church in Dedham. Interment took place at Brookdale Cemetery in Dedham.

In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in Bill's memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.


Barbara (Slifky) Wolfgang 

Barbara (Slifky) Wolfgang, of Stoughton, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 16.    

Devoted daughter of the late Bernard and Fay Slifky. Loving mother Amy Tabor of Stoughton and Eric Wolfgang & his wife Jeanne of Groton, CT. and the late David Ross Goldstone. Cherished grandmother of Rachael Tabor, Zachary and Taylor Wolfgang . Dear sister of Rhona Cohen & her husband Ken, Allene Kravitz & her husband Steven and Anne Slifky.

Services were held at the Schlossberg Solomon Memorial Chapel in Canton. Burial followed at Sharon Memorial Park.

Helen Sandler (Mednick) Koss

Helen Sandler (Mednick) Koss, of Stoughton formerly of Randolph, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 17.

Beloved wife of the late Harry Koss and Sol Sandler. Loving mother of Elliot Sandler & his wife Susan of ME, Judy Inman & her husband Jim of Norton and the late Robert Sandler. Cherished grandmother of Wendy, Howard, Brandon and Shana and great-grandmother (Gigi) of Victoria, Bryden, Craig and Morgan. Dear sister of the late Evelyn Freeman, Edie Perlmutter and Arthur Mednick.

Services were held at the Schlossberg Solomon Memorial Chapel in Canton on  Sunday, Jan. 20. Burial followed at the Ohavei Zedek Cemetery in West Roxbury.
