Stoughton Obituaries (January 21)

The following are obituaries for Stoughton residents or those with Stoughton ties for the week of January 13-19.

John J. O'Hare

John J. O'Hare, 89, a lifelong resident of Stoughton, died unexpectedly at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton on January 16. He was the husband of 63 years of Joan A. (Atherton) O'Hare.

Son of the late John J. and Dorothy (Desilets) O'Hare, he was born in Haverhill, raised in Stoughton and graduated from Stoughton High School, Class of 1941.

Mr. O'Hare was a Corporal in the U.S. Army and a Veteran of World War II, also serving as a paratrooper. He worked for A&P for 30 years before retiring in 1979.

Upon retirement, he began a second career in sports. Mr. O'Hare began attending games and coaching Stoughton Little League and also served as a groundskeeper. He spent many hours at the hockey rinks and wrote sports articles for a local newspaper.

He became Executive Secretary for both the Hockomock and Mayflower Leagues. John's computer has a wealth of information on all Stoughton sports from 1913-2013. He also served as a school crossing guard in Stoughton.

In addition to his wife, Mr. O'Hare is survived by his children, Robert E. O'Hare and his wife Charlene of N. Easton and Jane D. Mooney and her husband Kevin E. of Stoughton, as well as his grandchildren, Benjamin and Kate Mooney.

He was the brother of Bill O'Hare and Irene Lowe both of NH, Edward O'Hare of Plymouth and the late Dorothy Uccello. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service was be held from the Farley Funeral Home in Stoughton on Saturday, January 19. Interment was private.

Donations in John's memory may be sent to the Stoughton Visiting Nurses Assn., 10 Pearl St., Stoughton, MA 02072.

Eugene R. "Gino" Lavoie

Eugene R. "Gino" Lavoie, 60, died Monday, January 14, 2013 at his home in Stoughton. Born in Chippewa Falls, WI, he was raised and educated in Winthrop, MA and was a longtime resident of Stoughton.

He worked as a machinist for Ark-Les Switch in Stoughton for several years. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, working on his truck, repairing household items and cooking on his grill. He also loved his cat and playing scratch tickets.

He was the father of Renee D. Lavoie of NH, James E. Lavoie of Stoughton and Amanda L. Lavoie of Oxford. He is survived by his brothers Earl Lavoie of NH and Russell Lavoie of MA. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren.

Visiting Hours were held at the Farley Funeral Home in Stoughton on Thursday, January 17. Funeral Services were private.

Joanne A. (Silver) Lipman

Joanne A. (Silver) Lipman, of Stoughton, passed away January 16, 2013. She was 69-years-old.

Beloved wife of Martin Lipman. Devoted mother of Elise Steever and her husband Scott of Somerset and Aimee Parcewski and her husband Michael of Stoughton.

Loving sister of Susan Feldman and her husband Daniel of Stoughton and Lois Silver Fiala of New York City, NY. Cherished grandmother of Jennifer, Kristen, Cameron, Ella & Ben.

Services were held at the Stanetsky Memorial Chapels in Canton on Friday January 18, 2013. Interment took place at Sharon Memorial Park.

Jean L. (Fairbanks) Berggren

Jean L. (Fairbanks) Berggren, 79, of Stoughton, died Saturday, January 19, at the Southeast Rehabilitation Center in Easton surrounded by her family.

Born in Boston, she was raised educated in Dedham and was a graduate of Dedham High School, Class of 1950. She worked as a Secretary for Hills Department Store in Canton and for Chadwicks in West Bridgewater for several years, retiring about 14 years ago.

In her free time, she enjoyed reading, shopping on QVC, traveling to New Hampshire and spending time with her family and her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Robert Sears of West Bridgewater, William Sears of Whitman, Kim Berggren of Randolph, Robin Murphy of Mansfield and Amy Simmons of Quincy. She was the mother of the late Lisa Herlihy. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandson and her cat, Daisy.

Funeral Services will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) in Stoughton on Tuesday, January 22, at 10:30 a.m. Visiting Hours will be Monday, January 21, from 4-7 p.m. at the Farley Funeral Home.

Interment will take place at Dry Pond Cemetery in Stoughton. Donations in Jean's Memory may be made to the Massachusetts Humane Society, PO Box 890127, East Weymouth, MA 02189.

Luis M. Sousa

Luis M. Sousa, 79, died Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Copley at Stoughton Nursing Home in Stoughton.

Born in St. Michael's, Azores, Portugal, he was raised and educated in St. Michael's. Mr. Sousa moved to the United States in 1978 and settled in Cambridge where he lived for many years. He was a resident of Stoughton since 1997.

He worked in the Kitchen at the Parker House in Boston for over 15 years, retiring over 25 years ago. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by his siblings, Eduarda Freitas of Stoughton, Evelina Sousa and Estrela Cunha both of Cambridge and Fernanda Araujo and Marcelino Sousa both of Canada. He was predeceased by his brothers, Mariano and Jose Sousa. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) in Stoughton on Wednesday, January 23 at 10 a.m. Visiting Hours will be Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Farley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Stoughton.

Israel Gaffin

Israel Gaffin, of Stoughton, formerly of Brockton, passed away January 13, 2013.

Beloved husband of the late Sarah (Tepper) Gaffin.

Devoted father of David Gaffin and his wife Paula of Brockton, Leo Gaffin and his wife Esteandrea of Stoughton and Clara Schechter and her husband Menachim of Stoughton.

Cherished grandfather of Michael Gaffin and his wife Norma, Eric Gaffin, Myah Stone and her husband Roger, Helena Bresnick and her husband Stephen, Daniel Schechter and Leah Schechter. Proud great grandfather of John, Aiden, Nathan, Simone and Hailey. Dear friend of Ted Carlson and his wife Joellen.

Active member of the former Cong. Agudas Achim in Brockton.

Funeral services were January 14 at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel in Canton. Interment followed at Sharon Memorial Park.
