One Year Ago: Stoughton Reacts to bin Laden's Death

May 1, 2012 marks the one-year anniversary of SEAL Team 6 killing bin Laden, who was the architect of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Americans had a sense of pride and patriotism when President Barack Obama announced to the nation Sunday night, May 1, 2011, that U.S. Navy Seals and Special Forces had killed Osama Bin Ladin, the architect of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, and other acts of terrorism worldwide.

Stoughton residents felt much the same.

Read what Stoughton residents and officials had to say about this historic event here:

The next evening, Monday, May 2, 2011, was the start of the Annual Town Meeting.

The Stoughton Fire Department’s newest edition to its fleet, Ladder 2, was on display, parked in the cafeteria side parking lot of Stoughton High. A 40-foot American flag was waving from the ladder, gently blowing in the light breeze, creating a picturesque patriotic scene.

The display of the truck and the announcement of  happened to be a coincidence. The plan to debut the truck at Town Meeting was already in place - the display was intended to thank Town Meeting members for supporting the purchase of the truck.

One year after Bin Laden’s death and over 10 years since 9/11, American citizens are still blindly allowing their civil liberties to be taken away one piece of legislation at a time. How much freedom are we willing to sacrifice to feel safe? Under the guise of fighting terrorism, the Patriot Act was adopted WITHOUT public approval or vote just weeks after the twin towers fell. These laws are simply a means to spy on our own citizens and to detain and torture dissidents without trial or a right to council. You can read much more about living in this Orwellian society of fear and see my visual response to these measures on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/09/living-in-society-of-fear-ten-years.html

Really - Orwellian society. The patriot act is a good way to choke the financing to terrorist organizations and allows a much clearer "follow the money" approach. If you are that unhappy here try Canada.
