"One Colonial Woman's World"

In
honor of Women's History Month, the Stoughton Historical Society will host independent
scholar Michelle Marchetti Coughlin to discuss her book One Colonial Woman's World on March 16 at 2:00 P. M.

Her book reconstructs the life of Mehetabel Chandler Coit (1673 –1758),
the author of what may be the earliest surviving diary by an American woman.  Coit’s personal experiences were linked
to broader social and political developments in some surprising ways. Her diary
contains entries on a broad range of subjects as well as poems, recipes, and
medical remedies;.  The
presentation will be preceded by a brief business meeting at which time a vote
will be taken to endorse an amendment to the by-laws which reads “Said
organization is organized exclusively for charitable, religious, educational,
and scientific purposes, including, for such purposes, the making of
distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under
section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any
future federal tax code.” This amendment is necessary to maintain the Society’s
tax-free status.  6 Park St                          781
