Week in Review: New Businesses, Tournament Basketball, Stoughton Reads Together (And More…)

A look at the top Stoughton Patch headlines from February 26 – March 3, 2012.

1. New and Expanded Businesses Open in Stoughton

At the former site of the Stoughton Coffee Shop, The Corner Cafe opened Monday morning, February 27. Located at the corner of School Street and Canton Street, the small spot is looking to attract a crowd serving good food with an excellent presentation.

L.A. Fitness, a national fitness chain, opened a branch adjacent to the Target Store and across from T.G.I. Friday's Restaurant on Hawes Way, off Route 139, in Stoughton on February 29.

And, Family Dollar has opened an expanded Stoughton location at 525 Washington Street, in the space formerly occupied by Royal Buffet Chinese Restaurant and Kidsports on Route 138.

2. Stoughton High Boys’ Basketball Advances in State Tournament

After beating Duxbury in the opening round of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional Tournament and Norwood in the quarterfinals, the Stoughton High boys’ varsity basketball team now advances to play rival Oliver Ames, the ninth-seed, in a semifinal matchup this Tuesday, March 6, at Brockton High.

Meanwhile, trailing by as much as 18, the SHS girls’ basketball team came back, took the lead, but couldn’t hold it down the stretch, as Newton North secured a 49-45 win in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 South Sectional tournament Wednesday evening, ending the SHS girls’ season.

3. Police & Fire

  • A charity Hockey game between the Stoughton Police and Fire Departments last week ends in a 1-1 tie. More importantly the game was a benefit for the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that helps military families in times of need.
  • Stoughton Police arrested an 18-year-old on Monday for allegedly breaking into a Stoughton home and stealing jewelry.
  • Part of a tree fell on a portion of the Senior Center/Youth Commission Building this past Saturday, February 25. There were no injuries, since the building was closed.

4. 2012 Stoughton Reads Together

“The Killer Angels,” a Civil War Era Novel centering on the Battle of Gettysburg, is the 2012 Stoughton Reads Together Book Selection. A number of activities are planned for the months of March and April.

5. Best Of: Patch Readers Pick Best Place to Get Sandwich in Stoughton

Bob’s Famous Foodmart edged Maxie’s for the top spot in this week’s “Best Of” poll, which asked readers to vote on the best place in Stoughton to get a sandwich.
