Region Roundup: Shooting; Fatal Crash on Route 24; EEE; Mitt Romney (And More...)

A man was transported to Boston Medical Center the afternoon of July 16 with a gunshot wound in the lower back, suffered at the Lodge at Stoughton on Technology Center Drive.

The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Stoughton Police believe to have a "person of interest in the case."

It is believed the shooting took place outside of building #404 at the apartment complex, following an argument inside the building, according to police.

Massachusetts State Police responded to the crash at 3:55 a.m. on July 15 after receiving calls from other motorists reporting a wrong-way driver, traveling south on the northbound side of Route 24, north of Exit 16, in West Bridgewater.

The crash killed two people - Lisa Banat, 19, of Mansfield and John LaChapelle, 44, from Tiverton, R.I. Both Banat, the suspected wrong-way operator, and LaChapelle were pronounced dead at the scene. Three more people were injured in the crash.

On arrival patrols found four vehicles involved, the wrong way vehicle and three others it had struck, one of which had burst into flames.

Since the Massachusetts Department of Public Health found it's first group of Eastern Equine Encephalitis infected mosquitoes in Easton a week ago, what was a small sample there has grown into a widespread issue in Southeastern Mass.

Infected mosquitoes were found in Carver last week and more infected mosquitoes were found in Easton, Rehoboth and Canton this week, prompting the state to announce it would use aerial spraying to combat the bugs in 21 towns.

Adam Carine, 24, of Mansfield, was charged with attempting to commit a crime (breaking and entering in the daytime) and more than $250 in malicious damage to property for an attempted house break on Newcomb St., Norton on July 16.

Norton detectives were in the area due to the recent house breaks when they observed Carine attempting to enter the residence through a window.

Carine was also arrested in Norton in December of 2010 after a similar incident.

Foxborough Town Manager Kevin Paicos shared some good news at last week’s Board of Selectmen meeting when he announced the town received a $100,000 Regional Public Safety Dispatcher grant from the E911 Department to fund a feasibility study to see whether a regional dispatch center for Foxborough, Walpole and Medfield would work for the communities involved.

Foxborough Police Chief Edward O’Leary said the grant money will give the three communities interested in a regional dispatch center an opportunity to make an “objective assessment as to whether regionalization would fit in” Foxborough, serving the communities of Walpole and Medfield.

It may be eight months away, but the KP Boosters are already preparing for their big charity basketball game in March.

This is not any ordinary game however. Inspired by a similar event for the Westford Academy, the boosters will be teaming up with the New England Patriots for a game that will feature members of the Pats, KP students, and other members of the KP community.
