Gallery: Stoughton Handles Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy hit Stoughton on Monday, causing damage and power outages around town. However, the town was spared the extent of damage and outages experienced during Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011.

While damage and power outages were not as widespread as what occurred in August 2011 during Tropical Storm Irene, Hurricane Sandy made its presence felt in Stoughton, Monday, Oct. 29. However, the the town was luckily spared any catastrophic events.

At day's end about 17-percent of the town was without power, a number that remains unchanged as of Tuesday morning, according to National Grid.

Deputy Fire Chief Greg Goldberg said it was a busy day for the team's Emergency Management Response team - the Stoughton Fire , Police and Public Works Departments - which declared a local state of emergency for the town on Monday.

Goldberg said from the hours of 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. the fire department responded to about three dozen logged calls, many of which dealt with downed trees and wires.

A large tree fell between two homes on Rayburn Road, Goldberg said, disconnecting wires attached to the homes. There were no reports of injuries.

Fire Station 2 on Central St., the headquarters for Stoughton's Emergency Management team, was not spared Sandy's wrath, as between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, Goldberg said he heard a "boom" when a tree behind the building fell and hit the station, but caused no damage.

The town dealt with road closures on Highland St. and on Bay Rd. down by Crescent Ridge.

There was an outage out at the New England Sinai Hospital on York St., with the hospital running on generator, Goldberg said.

And the fire department responded to a call for someone stuck in an elevator at the Courtyard Marriott on Technology Center Dr.

Still, Goldberg felt the town made out well, "all things considered."

After Stoughton schools and town offices were closed on Tuesday, they are open on Tuesday. The "Town will be fully operational" Tuesday, Interim Town Manager Joseph Feaster told About Town columnist Mark Snyder.
