ABOUT TOWN: Stoughton's Town Clerk Takes Job in Florida

Welcome to "About Town with Mark Snyder," a column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what's going on around town.

TOWN CLERK TAKES JOB IN FLORIDA: Town Clerk Cheryl Mooney, who is credited by many for making the Town Clerk's office much improved, is leaving for Florida.

She tells About Town that Friday, July 5, will be her last day on the job. But, there's no vacation in the immediate future for Mooney. She starts her new job as City Clerk of Temple Terrace, Florida on Monday, July 8!

Mooney said that her "significant other" is retiring and she's always wanted to go to Florida.

"I just didn't know I'd be going there this soon," she said, adding, "I still need to sell my house in Reading. I've been commuting from there. We've had three offers on the house, and they all fell through."

Mooney was Town Clerk in Reading from 1996-2009, before becoming Stoughton's Town Clerk, according to an article in the The Tampa Tribune.

Mooney feels that she's leaving "the department in better shape than I found it. I'm leaving a better legacy behind. I'll miss everyone from town. It's been nice here. But, I won't miss the snow."

It's been a particularly busy stretch for the Town Clerk's Office, with six elections held since March 2012 (seven if you count the 2013 local town election and senate primary held on the same day as separate elections).

The office also issues birth, death and marriage certificates, registers voters, handles the annual census, and issues dog licenses, among many other tasks. Mooney also serves as clerk at Town Meeting, recording each vote taken, and swears in town officials, elected or appointed town board members, and town employees like police officers and firefighters.

Human Resources Director Jamie Kelley will be directing the department until a new clerk is hired, according to sources in Town Hall. Mooney says that ads are being prepared to search for her successor.
