ABOUT TOWN: Stoughton's Somers Runs for One Fund; New Thrift Shop Opening

Welcome to "About Town with Mark Snyder," a column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what's going on around town.

STOUGHTON WOMAN RUNS FOR ONE FUND: Jill Somers, best known to Stoughton residents as a member of the Energy & Sustainability Committee, hit the road on June 30 for a fundraiser for One Fund, a benefit for victims and survivors of the Boston Marathon Bombings.

UMass Dartmouth students, alumni, faculty, and staff - and residents throughout Massachusetts - ran a 54-mile Torch Relay to support victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy and to demonstrate the true character of UMass Dartmouth students.

Jill was assigned to carry the torch for the UMass Dartmouth event.

She begin her run at Planet Fitness in Stoughton, proceeded North on Route 138 through Stoughton Center and continued North on Route 138 to Stop and Shop, where the Torch was passed to the next participant.

She explains to About Town, "I just finished my Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Development at Umass Dartmouth in May, and I also have reconnected with my passion with running over the last 7 months. When I received the notification that this Torch Relay was coming through Stoughton (my hometown for life) and that they were looking for Students and Alumni to run or walk through various legs of the 54-mile run, I knew I needed to participate. So I signed up for the Stoughton leg of the relay."

Somers continued, "I do not have any specific ties to the Boston Marathon Bombing Survivors, but I am glad to be able to help in any way I can. If running three miles will assist the University raise money for the One Fund, then I am proud to be a part of it. Although fundraising is not a requirement, it is part of its purpose."

The 54-mile torch relay went from Dartmouth to Boston, also passing through nearby communities like Easton, Canton and Milton.
