"Five Things you Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance.

1. Freeze Warning Issued for Stoughton Area

With temperatures forecast to drop below freezing in the overnight hours Friday into Saturday, the National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for the area, in effect from 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Below freezing temperatures and widespread frost will kill sensitive vegetation, and it should deal a blow to the mosquito population, curbing the EEE threat many towns in the area have dealt with since July.

Temperatures will reach the low to mid-50s Friday, with temperatures falling to the low 30s in the overnight hours. The high is expected to be in the low 50s on Saturday during the day.

Temperatures warm back up again starting Sunday, reaching the 60s. Monday may reach the low 70s.

2. Stoughton High Volleyball to "Dig for a Cure"

For the third consecutive season, the Stoughton High volleyball team and the Sharon High volleyball team will meet in a "Dig for the Cure" match, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

After Sharon played host last season, this year's match takes place at the Stoughton High gym. Those in attendance can make a donation before entering the gym, with all money raised going to support the American Cancer Society.

Players on both teams will be wearing all shades of pink. Members of both teams will also be playing or coaching in memory of someone who died of cancer, or in honor of a cancer survivor.

The freshmen play at 4 p.m., the JV play at 5 p.m. and the varsity play at 6 p.m.
