Stoughton YMCA Working on New Family Fitness Area, Functional Training Studio and Cycle Room

The renovations at the Stoughton YMCA are designed to include space and equipment that "transcend age and ability." The renovations are expected to be complete by Jan. 2012.

The is currently working on some renovations to their Central St. facility, which will include a new family fitness area, a functional training studio and a cycle room, all of which are set to open in January 2012.

The new family fitness area is designed to include space and equipment that “transcend age and ability.”

The Stoughton YMCA said their vision is to have grandparent, parent and child all able to exercise at the same time, all having their needs met.

This new family fitness area, functional training studio, and dedicated Ycycle studio will be downstairs alongside the locker rooms, basketball courts, pool and group fitness studio. These spaces were previously used as office space, a multipurpose group fitness space, and a functional training area.

New equipment includes step-through recumbent bikes, NuSteps and an upper body cycle for those with mobility issues, interactive bikes and Jacobs Ladders to add options to hold the attention of younger members, and of course, the Y’s “standard favorites.”

The new functional training area will be attached to this space and includes TRX upgrades and all the space that has been missing on the general fitness floor.

“It is so important to us that kids prioritize fitness and a healthy lifestyle at a young age—this renovation will give ages 8 and above, options that will engage them and make fitness fun,” the Stoughton YMCA said in a press release.

“At the same time, we considered equipment appropriate for our members with mobility issues—people need a non-intimidating space where they can begin at their own pace and not get frustrated with equipment, it’s ease of use (or lack thereof) and it’s appropriateness for their physical abilities.”

The Y has taken two rooms that existed independently and adjoined them to create a cardio area with over 17 pieces of equipment and a functional training studio with 16 ceiling mounted TRX resistance trainers, kettlebells, battleropes, a heavybag, and a variety of other training methods.

Their new Ycycle studio will allow the Y to design a studio that’s built for indoor cycling, rather than a multi-purpose studio with cycles in it.

“We’re excited at the opportunity to offer cyclists and those considering cycling, their own dedicated group fitness studio,” the Stoughton Y said in a release.

Construction began on Oct. 31 and the Grand Opening is scheduled for Jan. 2. But, the Y will start opening spaces as they’re ready—TRX classes begin again in their new location this Thursday, Dec. 1 at 6:15 p.m.

The Y will publish a full schedule shortly for both spaces.
