Stoughton YMCA Holds Ribbon Cutting for Family Fitness Center

The Stoughton YMCA kicked off its open house on January 3 with a ribbon cutting for its new Family Fitness Center.

The branch in Stoughton had the official ribbon cutting for their new state-of-the-art Family Fitness Center on the lower level of their complex. The ceremony, sponsored by the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce, was held Monday morning, January 3.

The new area is designed for families to workout together, bringing children, parents and grandparents together.

“In order to improve the health of the community kids need to start developing fitness-related skills early in life,” Serah Selmon, Associate Executive Director of the YMCA said.

“This space is designed so that ages eight and above can begin to develop sustainable healthy living skills that coincide with the other opportunities in the Y.”

Selmon said the equipment is designed to “engage children and those with fitness mobility issues.” The aim, she said, is to “encourage fitness for all.”

This new family fitness area, functional training studio, and dedicated Ycycle studio is downstairs alongside the locker rooms, basketball courts, pool and group fitness studio. These spaces were previously used as office space, a multipurpose group fitness space, and a functional training area.

New equipment includes step-through recumbent bikes, NuSteps and an upper body cycle for those with mobility issues, interactive bikes and Jacobs Ladders to add options to hold the attention of younger members

The Y has taken two rooms that existed independently and adjoined them to create a cardio area with over 17 pieces of equipment and a functional training studio with 16 ceiling mounted TRX resistance trainers, kettlebells, battleropes, a heavybag, and a variety of other training methods.

Their new Ycycle studio will allow the Y to design a studio that’s built for indoor cycling, rather than a multi-purpose studio with cycles in it.

In addition to Monday’s ribbon cutting, the Y also held an Open House, offering healthy food samples, family fun and games, a giant inflatable slide in the gym, and introductory classes for Bodypump, Zumba, and TRX.

Faces In the Crowd at the ribbon cutting: Selectmen John Stagnone, John Anderson, John Anzivino, and Cynthia Walsh; Old Colony YMCA President and Chief Executive Officer Vincent Marturano and Jeffrey Russell, Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer; Stoughton Branch Senior Executive Director Joyce Dwyer, and co-Executive Directors Ellen Greene and Serah Selmon; Stoughton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Terry Schneider, Membership Director Joanne Schneider, Chairman Chris Petrie, and Board member Cindy Pazyra.
