Shaw's in Stoughton Officially Closes

While the large orange and green Shaw's sign still graced the front of the largest storefront in Shaw's Plaza in Stoughton on Sunday, it was just a reminder of what once was - the supermarket itself is now closed, for good.

Last week marked the final one for the Shaw's in Stoughton at 666 Washington St.

Back on July 8, the company announced it would be closing six of its underperforming supermarkets - including the Stoughton location - by August 3, meaning Shaw's Plaza in Stoughton would lose its anchor store, and a 35,000 square foot retail space would become vacant.

And, on Sunday, August 4, a day after the supermarket permanently shut its doors, closed signs, hand-written on white poster board, were seen hanging from the windows.

Shaw's was one of the largest employers in town, with more than 100 people working there, according to data from the Massachusetts Labor and Workforce Development.

But the store had struggled, the company said.

"We strive to ensure the success of all our stores, however, it is occasionally necessary for us to close those that are not meeting company goals," Steve Sylven, External Communications Manager for Shaw's, wrote in an email sent to the Stoughton Board of Selectmen, informing the Board of the company's plan to close the Stoughton supermarket.

"The store has not been profitable for quite some time, and despite the best efforts of the company and our associates, we have not been able to reposition it to better compete in the marketplace and don’t anticipate being able to change this trend," the email continues.

Coolidge Properties in Brookline owns the Stoughton shopping plaza, and its Vice President, Jeff Vecchio said his company is "considering all options" when it comes to filling this now vacant supermarket space.

Though no longer in Stoughton, Shaw's will still remain in the area, with a supermarket right over the Stoughton line, located at the Cobbs Corner Village Shoppes in Canton, as well as locations in Sharon, Easton and Randolph.
