Maxie’s Gearing up for 2nd Annual Matzo Ball Mania

The matzo ball eating contest will take place at Maxie's in Stoughton on Sunday April 1. This year's contest will raise money for the Sumner Redstone Burn Center at Massachusetts General Hospital.

, a unique fundraising event, is gearing up to crown a new Matzo Ball eating champion.

On Sunday, April 1, 2012, starting at 2 p.m., in Stoughton will host the event with all proceeds being donated to the Sumner Redstone Burn Center at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Contestants will compete for a $500 first place prize and a $200 second place prize.

Organizers are out in the community now looking for sponsors and participants.

The registration fee is $50 for participants, with a Matzo Ball Mania shirt included.

Participants have eight minutes to eat as many matzo balls as possible. The use of utensils is not allowed, but participants are allowed to drink water, according to the official rules of the competition.

The entre fee for spectators is a $15 donation, which includes a $5 gift card to Maxie’s and the chance to win a 46” television.

In addition to the matzo ball eating contest itself, there will also be a number of gift certificates and silent auction items (like Patriots and Red Sox tickets) available.

Maxie’s owner Steve Robbins said Town Manager will be the master of ceremonies. NFL Hall of Famer, and former Patriots great, will award the Grand Prize and noted criminologist will serve as one of the judges.

The and Canton Fire Departments will have trucks in the parking lot that day as well, Robbins said.

The winner of the 2011 competition was Joseph Menchetti from Cheshire, CT, who ate 51 matzo balls in eight minutes to claim the top prize. Second place went to Stoughton resident Rick Tweedy who ate 38.

Massachusetts General Hospital has provided burn treatments to patients since 1821. It helped usher in the modern era of burn care in 1942 in the aftermath of the disastrous Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire.
