IKEA Recalls More than 2 Million Children’s Bed Canopies

IKEA is recalling more than 2 million children’s bed canopies due to a strangulation hazard, according to a statement released by the company. Anyone owning one of these canopies should stop using it immediately and bring it to any IKEA store for a full refund.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says infants and young children can get entangled at the neck in the fabric of these children’s bed canopies, posing a strangulation risk.

There have been nine reports worldwide of children getting entangled in the canopies, according to the CPSC, including one in the United States where a 7-month-old girl pulled the canopy’s fabric into her crib and wrapped it around her neck several times.

Approximately 2.6 million of these products have been sold worldwide, with about 255,000 in the United States.

The canopies are made of a mesh fabric and hang from the ceiling onto a child’s bed or crib. They measure 7 feet in length and 2 feet in diameter. They were sold at IKEA stores nationwide and online at www.ikea-usa.com from August 1996 through march 2014 for between $10 and $30.

Canopies on the recall list include: LEGENDARISK, MINNEN bed Canopy set, BARNSLIG BOLL, MINNEN Brodyr, HIMMEL, FABLER, TISSLA and KLÄMMIG.The canopy’s name can be found on the washing instructions label sewn into the bottom of the fabric.
