News Round-up:Help 'Stuff a Truck' for Stoughton Food Pantry

Peg Carbone and The Stoughton Chamber of Commerce are inviting you to The Taste of Stoughton & Business Expo and to help them "Stuff a Truck" for Stoughton Food Pantries, Saturday, Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Stoughton High cafeteria.

The truck is owned by Terry Schneider, the executive director of The Stoughton Chamber of Commerce, that is bringing back the Taste of Stoughton & Business Expo.

The need for food supplies has increased as The Boston Food Bank has decreased their allotment to area towns. There also have been more cities and towns establishing food pantries to meet the need. Donations of monetary donations have also diminished.

Local pantries are also wondering what impact the current situation in Washington. D.C. will be as the government shutdown goes on.

"I was watching WCVB Channel 5's Chronicle, a nightly community show, and they had a segment on a campaign that Stop & Shop Companies started called, "Stuffed a Truck," whereas donations for The Boston Food Bank, are collected from supermarket shoppers", said Schneider. "I was so excited by this idea that I contacted my friend, Peg Carbone,to see if she would head up our own to benefit our Town of Stoughton Pantries, "St. Anthony's Free Market" and "The Ilse Marks Food Pantry."

Every Thursday, Carbone picks up donations at homes and businesses. The third anniversary of "Thursday is Food Pantry Day in Stoughton" is in December.

"It just seemed to make sense to benefit from the large audience that The Taste of Stoughton will attract," said Peg Carbone, a strong advocate for the food pantries.

South Coast Rail Open Houses Announced

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will host Open Houses in Fall River and Taunton on the Final Environmental Impact Statement/Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIS/FEIR) for South Coast Rail. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and MassDOT released the combined federal/state document on Sept. 23.

As part of the environmental review process, the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act office (MEPA) will accept public comments on the FEIR until October 25. MassDOT is sponsoring two Open Houses to provide information about the FEIR, which is a lengthy document. Depending on the status of the Continuing Resolution, the U.S. Army Corps will also participate in the Open Houses.

The Open Houses are scheduled for:

There is a link to the electronic version of the full report, an Executive Summary, Guide to the FEIS/FEIR and a project fact sheet at www.mass.gov/southcoastrail.
