ABOUT TOWN WITH MARK SNYDER: Saluting Veterans in Stoughton

Stoughton Veterans Agent Mike Pazyra has a way for everyone in town to take part in honoring those who served.

First, there was the Re-flagging of Veterans' Graves on Saturday for all veterans at the Holy Sepulcher and Evergreen Cemeteries.

Then, on Nov. 11, the Veterans Day Parade will form in the parking area at that same VFW Post 1645 at 9:30 a.m.  The parade begins at 10 a.m. sharp.  The parade will proceed down Washington Street through the Square to the Stoughton Town Hall via Washington, School and Pearl streets for a ceremony and wreath laying at the Memorial Bell in front of Town Hall.

The parade then reforms on Pearl Street and proceeds back through the Square to Faxon Veterans Memorial Park on Park Street (across from Stoughton Public Library) for two ceremonies at the two memorials there.  The parade will then proceed down Walnut Street to Washington Street and go back to the VFW.

Participants in the parade usually include the VFW Color Guard and Firing Detail, Veterans Groups, the Stoughton Police and Fire Departments, the Stoughton High School Band, Town and State officials, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and other civic groups.

The ceremonies at the various sites include opening prayers, music by the Stoughton High School Band, an Honor Guard Firing Detail (put your hands over the children's ears, it can get loud), the laying of wreaths, and comments from various speakers.  The parade usually ends  approximately at noon. Participants are then cordially invited to a franks and beans collation at the VFW at 837 Washington St., which this year will be expanded to as a Memorial to Lt.Charles Large, former Stoughton Firefighter, Stoughton Precinct One Chairman at Town Meeting, and a decorated WWII Vet, who passed away at 89 on November 2.

The collation will be followed a Memorial Square Dedication.  All are welcome to attend.  This event is scheduled as follows: At 2:15 p.m., the intersection of Lindelof Avenue and Kay Way will be dedicated to Herbert Joel Lindelof.   Charlie Large's Wake will be at Farley Funeral Home, until 5 p.m. on Veterans Day.  His funeral is the following morning at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery.
