ABOUT TOWN: Eagle Scout Soars (And Fundraiser Tonight in Stoughton)

Stoughton's Stephen Zorn of Troop 516 is this town's newest Eagle Scout.

Eagle Scouts are a special part of the Boy Scout program.  There are not many of them.  But, Stoughton seems to have a good number of these great young men, many of whom have gone on to great success in life.

Stephen Zorn, a member of Troop 516, is the newest Eagle Scout in Stoughton. Zorn joins fellow Troop 516 members Adam Lurie and Nolan Fraine, and Troop 88 member Nick Selby, who all recently became Eagle Scouts.

According to Wikipedia, Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). A Scout who attains this rank is called an Eagle Scout or Eagle. Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than two million young men.

Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges and demonstrating Scout Spirit through the Boy Scout Oath and Law, service, and leadership.

This includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. Eagle Scouts are presented with a medal and a badge that visibly recognizes the accomplishments of the Scout.

Ceremonies are held, usually in a local place of worship that sponsors the troop. Additional recognition can be earned through Eagle Palms, awarded for completing additional tenure, leadership, and merit badge requirements.

For his service project, Zorn built six cabinets on the back of the stage at the First United Methodist Church.

He says, “I chose this project by first choosing the beneficiary I wanted to do my project for and then deciding on the project. I chose the First United Methodist Church because it is my Troop's Charter Organization and a project had not been done for them in several years.”

29 people volunteered 341 hours to help complete the project.

In addition to earning his Eagle, Stephen has also earned a Bronze and Gold Eagle Palm. These are additional awards that can be earned by Eagle Scouts if they earn the Eagle Award before they turn 18 and age out of scouting. Stephen earned his Eagle when he was 16.

He is on staff in the kitchen at Camp Wanocksett in Jaffrey, NH for the third year now. Zorn is a Senior at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood. There, he’s on the National Honor Society.

He earned a varsity letter in Rugby his sophomore and junior years and was awarded the Unsung Hero Award his sophomore year. He is currently captain for this year’s Rugby team.

We congratulate Stephen on this great accomplishment!

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT FUNDRAISER: Another potential Eagle Scout is working hard towards his goal. Brian Walsh is working on becoming the latest Eagle Scout with Troop 516.

For his Eagle Project, he is putting in a trail kiosk at the Lessa Playground for the Storybook Trail.

Brian is doing a fundraiser Monday, August 12 at Jake’s Wayback Burgers, at the corner of Central and Washington Streets. 20% of everything spent there from 5-9 p.m. will be donated to Walsh's project.  No coupon is necessary.

This is the way the Lopes family, owners of Jake's Wayback Burgers, likes to give back to the community.  Have a burger, shake and fries, and help a future Eagle soar!
