The Smile You Always Wanted: Local Orthodontists Says More Adults Opt for Braces

An increasing number of adults are having Orthodontic work.  While the overwhelming majority of those getting braces are in their teens, a growing number are in their 20’s, 30’s 40;’s and older.  Adults now comprise about 25% of Orthodontic patients, up from 17% in 1994. • A private jet pilot in her early 30’s knew her smile is the first thing that greets celebrity guests boarding her plane. Orthodontic treatment gave her a much-improved smile.

  • A 40-ish cookbook author realized that, although she had braces as a child, her teeth had shifted from not wearing retainers, and she wanted to improve her smile for media appearances.

  •

“We emphasize to the adult market how good they’re going to look and how much self confidence that’s going to create – and that the appliances can be almost invisible during treatment,” says Dr. Andrew Chase of ARCH Orthodontics which operates 9 offices south of Boston and on Cape Cod. “Research shows that having straight teeth can help with your social life and your career.”

Dr. Robert Chavez, founder of ARCH, notes, “It is common when we are finishing up a child's case and reviewing their successes, that a parent, usually a mom, says, "I'm next" or "I'm going to go after my next son/daughter." It is truly an emotionally rewarding feeling that takes me over as a practitioner to hear those words. It tells me that I have really done my job as a specialist to make a difference in the lives of not just the patient, but their entire family.” ARCH Orthodontics patients range in age from 4 to 80. Experts recommend that every child should have an Orthodontic evaluation by age 7.

“In about 6 months to 2 years, a patient can obtain drastic improvements to their smile which will last a lifetime, surely a dividend greater than the ‘self-image dilemma’ many have around ‘having to wear braces’ for a shot period,” says Dr. Chase.   “As we know, time flies; why not have a smile to be proud of for the rest of our lives? As tennis star Andre Agassi used to say in the camera ads, ‘Image is everything.’ Our patient’s’ image is greatly improved with an enhanced smile.”
