Stoughton Native Earns Fashion Scholar Award
Fashion student and Stoughton native Oliver Zachary Selby was one of nine Savannah College of Art and Design students selected as an YMA Fashion Scholar for 2014.
Selby's interest in the arts began at a young age and he began taking art classes at local galleries. While at Principia High School, Selby took sewing classes and created his own independent study in fashion. Through these he learned about the opportunities at SCAD and decided to pursue his interest in fashion design.
"Being at SCAD has given me the chance to grow and make connections in the fashion world, and winning this award for YMA will enable me to network with different fashion houses and companies," Selby said.
The rigorous application process for the scholarship begins in the fall and ends in December, when approximately 100 students are selected by some of the top names in fashion to receive a $5,000 scholarship and fashion mentorship. In years past, each YMA scholar has also been placed in internships with such renowned organizations as Neiman Marcus, Kenneth Cole, Polo Ralph Lauren and Saks Fifth Avenue. All nine SCAD students were honored Jan. 8, at the YMA Scholarship Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. This is the seventh consecutive year that SCAD students have been named YMA scholars.
The YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund is a national nonprofit association consisting of influential members of the fashion community.
