The former Navy SEAL and the longtime Congressman will face off June 25 to fill John Kerry's former U.S. Senate seat.
A political newcomer will face a long-time Massachusetts politician in the race to be the Bay State's next U.S. senator. The Associated Press has declared Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey of Malden the winners of their U.S. Senate special primary elections, according to tweets from Fox 25. The call for Gomez came approximately one hour after the polls closed in the statewide primary while a call for Markey came moments later. Gomez defeats his more seasoned opponents, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan of Abington and state Rep. Dan Winslow of Norfolk. Markey beat fellow U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch of South Boston. Ed Markey (Democrat) and Gabriel Gomez (Republican) won their respective party's primary in Tuesday's special election, but Stoughton voters preferred Stephen Lynch on the Democratic side and Michael Sullivan on the Republican side.
Stoughton voters bucked the state trend in both the Democratic and Republican primaries for U.S. Senate in Tuesday's special election. While the state backed Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) by a comfortable margin over Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston), Stoughton voters taking a Democrat ballot preferred Lynch to Markey by a 2 to 1 margin. Lynch received 2,025 votes in Stoughton to Markey's 1,030. He carried all eight precincts in town. On the Republican side, voters statewide picked Gabriel Gomez by a comfortable margin over former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan and state representative Dan Winslow. But Stoughton voters taking a Republican ballot backed Sullivan over Gomez by a slim 5-vote margin, 398 to 393. Winslow …

BE AN EDUCATED VOTER! On April 30th, you'll be able to get two separate ballots in the venue where your precinct votes. One of those ballots is the party primary for U.S. Senate. The other, a local ballot, will enable you to most importantly elect two members of the School Committee. The other races on the local ballot are all uncontested. Incumbent School Committee member Joyce Husseini will be seeking reelection. She will be joined on the ballot by Carol Brown, Debra Cote and Patricia MacNeil. Former School Committee Chairman, and current member, Tom Colburn is not running for reelection. Colburn has served three terms on the School Committee. Husseini, a former Chair, and the current Vice Chair of the School Committee, is the former…

Stoughton voted for Democrat Elizabeth Warren this past November, yet owns fewer hybrid cars than the state average.
Does hybrid vehicle ownership indicate voting patterns? Are towns which voted for Democrat Elizabeth Warren this past November more likely to have higher hybrid ownership rates? Not exactly. That’s what we found when we compared data from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to the vote in the 2012 U.S. Senate race. You can see the results in the map above: Large circles suggest towns with more hybrid ownership per capita, and the red/blue color suggests which way those towns voted last year. In Stoughton, which voted for Warren, 15.4 of every 1,000 vehicles is a hybrid, compared to the state average of 18. Patch’s research suggests the state has a good number of what might be called “green Republican” communities. More than 40 …
