Last Saturday, May 12, the Stoughton High varsity baseball team took on former Black Knights in the 3rd Annual SHS Alumni Baseball game. The varsity squad was led by coach Mike Armour. Bob Ashley, who coached the team for 27 years between the 80s, 90s and 2000s, led the alumni team. He was assisted by Kevin McCormick, a 1968 SHS graduate and former teacher. The alumni squad stayed undefeated in the series, earning their third straight win. Take a look at photos from the game in the media gallery above. The Stoughton High School Fine Arts Department presented its 2012 Spring Fling Art Show and Concert on Friday, May 11. Take a look at a selection of the student art work that was on display that evening outside the auditorium and in the Superintendent's wing of the building (in the media gallery above). Art ranged from paintings to sketches and drawings to photography to ceramics. ***
Last Thursday, May 3, the O'Donnell Middle School held a "Knight of Excellence" at the school, showcasing student work in all grades, across the curriculum. The classrooms, as well as gym, media center and cafeteria had various displays of work and projects. Students (and parents) were also able to partake in a number of activities. One of the special events was a geography bee. Ryan Dolinsky, a seventh grader, was crowned champion after correctly answering a question about the Rocky Mountains. About 100 people came to the Portuguese National Club Friday night, April 27 for the 7th annual “Doin’ It For Diane” fundraiser, a benefit for Stoughton's food pantries. The fundraiser is named in memory of Diane Murray, wife of longtime South School principal David Fisher. Shortly after Diane died in August 2005, the first "Doin' It For Diane" (DIFD) event was held, as a way to honor Diane and her favorite charity. This year, more than $20,000 was raised for Stoughton's food pantries - the Ilse Marks Pantry and St. Anthony's Free Market. This represented the most money raised in the seven …

Dwight MacKerron of the Stoughton Historical Society led a group of about 30 on a tour of the Glen Echo Property on the Stoughton/Canton line, on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22. The Town of Stoughton recently completed the purchase of Glen Echo, paying 1.2 million for the historic North Stoughton property. Glen Echo is roughly a 96-acre property that can be used for passive recreation and conservation, including six acres for active recreation. Town Meeting members approved the purchase of the land at the 2011 Annual Town Meeting. At the June 6, 2011 session, members voted 93-30 to allow the …
Stoughton traveled back to the Civil War Era this past Saturday as part of the Stoughton Public Library's Stoughton Reads Together Program.This year's book selection, “The Killer Angels,” is a historical novel written by Michael Shaara that tells the story of the four days of the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War.On April 21, dozens turned out for a Civil War Remembrance Day featuring a parade, reenactments, camp, drills, bayonet and cooking demonstrations. The Stoughton Public Library and Stoughton Youth Commission sponsored an Earth Day celebration at the library on Saturday, April 21. There were info tables from nature, health and green related organizations in town set up outside the library. Children (and adults) enjoyed a "Farm Visit with Dawn Cordeiro," getting to pet a number of different animals. And, author David Rottenberg read "Gwendolyn the Dancing Pig" while dancers from Starline Academy in Stoughton acted out the story. After a highly entertaining dance rendition of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” routine, Stoughton High senior Matthew Moore was named the 2012 winner of the annual Mr. SHS competition. The male pageant and fundraiser for the senior class was held last Wednesday night, April 11 at the Stoughton High School auditorium. Moore, who was also crowned Homecoming King back in the fall, earned top honors, becoming the seventh student to earn the title of “Mr. SHS,” since the first competition back in 2006. Stoughton Youth Baseball kicked off its season with its annual Opening Day Parade on Saturday, April 14—a perfect early spring day. The parade featured teams from T-ball to the Major Leagues making their way towards V.F.W. Memorial Field, the home of Stoughton Youth Baseball. The Major League Cubs and Red Sox were the last teams marching in the parade. The Cubs are the defending National League champions and the Red Sox are the defending American League Champions. The Stoughton boys, led by Aaron Mack, Brandon Alves and Steffan Jackson, beat Sharon, 84-52. Meanwhile, the Stoughton girls, led by Jade Paul and Julia Quattrucci, beat the Eagles 76-60. On the boys’ side, Aaron Mack won the 100-meter event (11.3 seconds) and the long jump (19’11”). Alves won the shot put (44’11”) and discus (108’1”). The Stoughton High boys’ and girls’ tennis teams and the SHS girls’ volleyball team held separate fundraisers in town on Saturday, April 7. The tennis teams held a car wash at the Papa Ginos parking lot on Washington St., while the volleyball team held a yard sale at Faxon Park. The Gibbons School held its annual Spring Fair on March 31, from at the elementary school, located at 235 Morton Street. There were mechanical bull rides, karaoke and a pie eating contest, as well as dozens of games, kids’ crafts, a Cake Walk, gift basket raffle, hair feathers, nail art and face Painting. After earning their first win in the series in 2011, the Stoughton Fire Department proved it was not a fluke, beating the Stoughton Police Department for the second straight year in the annual “Guns ‘N Hoses” Hockey game. The Fire Department won this year’s charity hockey game, played Saturday night, March 24 at the Asiaf Arena in Brockton, by a score of 3-1. The game benefits the Friends of Stoughton Hockey (FOSH). The Police Department won the first four games in this series, but after two-straight wins for the SFD, the police only hold a 4-2 game advantage in the six year history of the …
The Hansen School PTO held its Spring Carnival last Saturday, March 27, at the elementary school. The carnival had multiple games and activities; prizes; a food court; raffle items; a silent auction; nail painting; a Hawk Walk (a.k.a. a cake walk); a bake sale; face painting; a yard sale; and the opportunity to get an up-close view of police and fire vehicles.
