COME HEAR THE OLD, OLD STORY IN A BRAND NEW WAY!

When you think about reading the Bible, do you have to suppress a yawn?

Do the words “Bible study” cause your eyes to glaze over?

Have you wanted to start reading the Bible but don’t know where to start?

Does the very thought of opening the Good Book intimidate you?

You are not alone, and the First Congregational Church of Stoughton is offering a new approach to the Bible that just may change your thinking!

Starting September 9 and continuing through next June, we will be focusing on forty of the most well-known stories of the Bible.  Each Sunday, a different story
will serve as the scripture lesson and the sermon focus during worship at 10 am;
a one-page handout will provide additional background and questions to ponder
about the story.

Then, following worship and coffee fellowship, youth and adults are invited to gather from 11:30 to (no later than) 1:00 to talk more about the story and its meaning for us today.  Free child care will be available for children up to grade 5.

The stories covered will include Adam and Eve, Noah and the Ark, Moses and the Burning Bush, Joseph and his Coat of Many Colors, Jonah and the Whale, David and Goliath, Daniel in the Lions’ Den, the Wedding at Cana, the Prodigal Son, Doubting Thomas, and Zacchaeus.

The bible is foundational to our faith, and it tells us the story of God, Jesus, and God’s people.  But many, even regular church-goers, feel “biblically illiterate” and don’t know what to do about it.  “Bible Top 40” has been created to be a fun and accessible way for anyone to learn the important stories of the bible.  One story is covered per week, and people are welcome to come every Sunday, once in a while, or whenever you can.

Whether you are a bible beginner or have been steeped in scripture all your life, everyone will be able to get something out of “Bible Top 40,” and whether you interpret the bible metaphorically or understand it as being literally true, each of these stories has some truth that we can apply to our 21st century lives.

In scripture, the number 40 represents spiritual transformation, and we hope that Bible Top 40 proves to a transformative experience for everyone who participates and helps you nurture their relationship with God.
