VIDEO: Stoughton Storm Update (February 1)

Department of Public Works Superintendent John Batchelder gives a storm update.

The town has endured round one of this winter blockbuster, and is preparing for round two.

Stoughton had already received more than 5 inches of snow shortly after noontime on Tuesday. D.P.W. Superintendent John Batchelder said his weather reports forecast a lot of freezing rain and ice, mixing with snow on Wednesday.

Between the two storms, the Stoughton area could receive 10 or more inches of snow, in addition to any rain and ice. Ice could present a whole new set of challenges.

Wednesday’s storm is expected to last all day and not stop until 2-4 a.m. on Thursday, according to Batchelder.

Batchelder said his snow removal budget is “long gone.” He said the town has been spoiled over the past couple of years with less snowy winters, but this winter will be “one for the books.”

Stoughton has received more than 60 inches of snow so far this winter season.

Roof Collapse Update

Batchelder said he received word that the crane that will be used to knock down the old Cheng-Du building, where the roof collapsed last Friday, could arrive tomorrow.  Once the demolition commences, traffic will be impacted in the center of town, so he advised drivers to seek alternate routes.
