Starving Artists, SHS Students Give Everything and the Kitchen Sink at Concert

SHS chorus students opened for Brandeis University’s Starving Artists at Sunday’s “Winter A Cappella” concert, the inaugural show for Kitchen Sink Productions.

He was in the marching band and in the concert band in high school, but it wasn’t until college that Jon Widberg, a 2008 graduate of Stoughton High, started to take up singing.

Widberg, now a junior at Brandeis University, was at the YMCA auditorium, performing with his college a cappella group, The Starving Artists, this past Sunday afternoon.

The co-ed performers from the Waltham university headlined “Winter A Cappella,” the inaugural show for Kitchen Sink Productions, a new production company run by Terry Schneider, executive director of the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce.

By definition the 12 members of  The Starving Artists who performed on Sunday did so without instruments; but through beat boxing and other vocal techniques, the group created the effect of having a backup band full of percussionists.

The group performed a number of hit songs including Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You,” Sara Bareilles’ “King of Anything,” and Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” and “Last Name.”

Widberg took lead vocals for “This Time Around,” performing a soulful rendition of the song sung by Hanson (of Mmmbop fame).

Widberg and a few of the other group members are local, but The Starving Artists are made up of performers from all over the country—Maine, New York, New Jersey, Minnesota, Illinois, Colorado and California.

Stoughton High’s chorale groups opened for The Starving Artists, with the Knightengales A Cappella, the Chamber Jazz Choir and the Women’s Chorale group performing one song each.

Kitchen Sink’s next show, “Night of Acoustics” is February 25 at the YMCA from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Take a look at the video gallery for highlights from the Sunday’s show.
