Region Roundup: Toddler Struck, Killed in Stoughton; Leah for Lia; Teacher Arrested on Suspicion of Enticing Child [and More]

Stoughton Toddler Killed in Collision Near Hansen School

The Norfolk County District Attorney's Office has released the name of the toddler killed in Friday afternoon's pedestrian accident in front of the Hansen Elementary School on Central St. in Stoughton.

Shayla Lutz, age 3, of Stoughton, was transported from the scene after being hit by a box truck, but did not survive her injuries, according to the DA's office. She was pronounced dead at the Good Samaritan Medical Center.

The accident took place at about 2:45 p.m. on September 14.

"Shayla and her mom, who was pushing another child in a stroller, were crossing Central Street to pick up her older sibling from Hansen Elementary School," CBS Boston reports.

"Initial indications are that the collision did not take place in the vicinity of a crosswalk," The DA's office stated in an earlier release.

Leah For Lia Set For Sept. 29

In the second year of the Leah Fernandes Memorial 5k, yet another family will benefit from the generosity of Norton. 

This year, a portion of funds from the run will go toward helping 3-year-old Lia Scagnoli, daughter of Peter and Tara Scagnoli of Norton. Lia was recently diagnosed with kidney cancer and will soon undergo surgery and treatments.

Teacher Arrested on Suspicion of Enticing Child

A former English teacher and basketball coach at Hurley Middle School in Seekonk was arrested Friday on suspicion of enticing a child under the age of 16 and accosting and annoying a person of the opposite sex, according to television station WPRI in Providence. Marco Correia, 27, was held on $5,000 bail and has a pretrial hearing scheduled for Nov. 7, according to WPRI.

Shaw's Plaza Purse Thief Arrested

An East Bridgewater woman was arrested Thursday morning after allegedly stealing a purse from an unsuspecting shopper in the Shaw's parking lot.

Courtney Nichole Mills, 20, of Andrew Road, East Bridgewater will be charged by Easton Police for unarmed robbery after she was arrested by Taunton Police.
