List of Most Dangerous Intersections in Massachusetts Includes Two in Stoughton

The Intersections at Washington St./Central St. and Canton St./School St. are among the most dangerous in the state.

The intersections of Washington/Central Streets and Canton/School Streets in Stoughton, are among the most 200 dangerous in the Massachusetts, according to a list released by the state, which tracked crashes and injuries from 2008-2010.

This "2008-2010 Statewide Top 200 Intersection Crash List" was included in a WBZ-TV I-Team report.

The Washington St. and Central St. intersection is tied for 59th on this list. The intersection includes traffic lights. Still, there have been 77 accidents there from 2008-2010, according to the list, and 15 injuries, but no fatalities.

Meanwhile, the Canton St. and School St. intersection is tied for 156th. This intersection does not include traffic lights. There have been 37 accidents there from 2008-2010, according to the list, and 12 injuries, as well as two fatalities.

There are plenty of other intersections that residents would also consider to be dangerous in Stoughton, namely the West St./Central St. intersection. Town officials have recently proposed changes to make this intersection safer following the tragic pedestrian accident in front of the Hansen Elementary School on Sept. 14 which killed three-year-old Shayla Lutz.

The Washington St. and York St. intersection, which is included on the Old Colony Planning Council's most hazardous intersection list, has seen 28 crashes and 14 injuries from 2007-2009.

The Washington St. and Lincoln St. intersection has seen 11 crashes, and one fatality, between 2007-2009, according to the OCPC. And, there have been 31 crashes and 5 injuries reported at the Washington Street (Route 138) at Park Street (Route 27)/Pleasant Street (Route 139) intersection in downtown Stoughton during this same period.

Washington St/Brock St should be on the list. Accidents there all the time.

Corner of Lincoln st and Plesant st , at Jimmy's Market! Lost track of how many have died there, not to mention the accidents just about every Saturday night.

Canton Street and Central Street Y intersection is awful. I've seen plenty of close calls there.

I agree with all the above comments, but certainly agree with Washington and York Streets being on that list. Turning left off York onto Washington is almost impossible at times. People get impatient and put their lives in danger trying to make that turn.

Washington and York is only a problem when traffic is very heavy or there is an inhibited driver afraid to pull out. The Stop and Shop lights must be adjusted better for the rush hour period to provide some gaps in traffic northbound. Why is this not being accomplished? The lights are always on the same timing all day long. Adjust the lights please.

I should have written that the lights "seem" to be on the same time line (above)

At Washington and Central I wish they'd consider making the southbound Washington St right lane into a right turn only lane. Washington turns into one lane just south of the intersection anyway and there is always someone who gets in that lane when the light goes red and holds up a ton of traffic trying to take a right onto Central. Since there is "right on red" there, this should be a right turn only lane.

Park St and Walnut St has been terrible since they made it illegal to make no left turn at the end of Rte 139 in Stoughton center. A little more signage on Rte 139 that shows people the correct route to take if they want to head towards Brockton on Rte 27 would also be helpful. Sumner St and Park St is also nasty - especially when there are a lot of people coming out of Park Ave after CCD classes. One fatality there in the past few years. If nothing else lights at either one if these places would slow down the traffic - I don't know what the speed limit is between Bob's Market and Stoughton center but I don't think it is 40+ mph like a lot of people do.

Washington and York Intersection, wasn't it NSTAR responsibility to install the lights after they finished putting in those transformers? Or what ever their called. They planted pinetrees, what about the traffic lights?

It would be helpful if they would put an arrow light at Central and Pleasant (Rt 139). It is impossible to take a left turn there, either way, during morning and evening commute. Have seen many accidents there, as drivers try to take the left at the yellow light. Very dangerous...
