LETTER: D’Angelos Manager Apologizes for Hurtful Comment

A letter from Eric Gurney, manager of the Central St. D’Angelos in Stoughton, apologizing to a customer for an anti-Semitic comment made earlier this month.

Editor's Note: A week ago, About Town with Mark Snyder wrote about Paul Berger’s unpleasant experience at the D’Angelos at 2137 Central St. in Stoughton:

ABOUT TOWN: Anti-Semitic Slur at Stoughton Sandwich Shop Causes Stir (Stoughton Patch, December 22, 2011)

Berger, a Stoughton resident and a regular customer at that D’Angelos, registered for a D’Angelos rewards card during his Dec. 17 visit to the sub shop and then asked the manager, Eric Gurney, if there was a senior discount program, as well.  Gurney responded, “Are you trying to Jew me down?”

Berger said he couldn’t believe what he had heard: “[Eric] said ‘oops’ after he said it.  I was truly shocked. I told him I resented it and that I would communicate with his boss. I threw my D’Angelos card and receipt at him and left.”

Gurney sent a letter of apology to Berger, dated December 22. Gurney wanted to share his letter with Patch readers.

The text of the letter is below and is also posted in the media gallery above.

Dear Mr. Berger,

I would like to offer you my sincerest apology for my lack of professionalism and hurtful comment I made to you on Saturday the 17th of December. I understand the depth of the insult and have learned from my mistake. I assure you this will never happen again and I never intended to hurt anyone. I enjoy you as a guest in my restaurant and hope to see you at some point to apologize in person. I am very saddened and regret the comment I made.

I have worked for D’Angelo’s for 16 years and know many of my customers by their first name. I assure you that I really do care for and respect the entire community.

With my deepest apology,

Eric Gurney

"Get over youself" Are you serious? This man made an anit-semitic remark to a customer. Joke or not it was out of line and unprofessional. I think that Eric has done the right thing and his letter sounds sincere but your comment angie is out of line. I would have been offended by the comment and I am not even Jewish.

I've dealt with Eric at D'Angelos for years. He takes very good care of D'Angelos Sandwich Shop, and the food is always top quality. He's always been kind and generous to St. Anthony's Market. (A food pantry that serves all of Stoughton) He has donated abundant food platters to us a couple of times a year for several years, when we have our Giving Tree and at the Post Office Food Drive. The Eric I know is thoughtful and kind. I imagine, like any of us that have to talk to the public for 8 hrs a day, an occasional 'mis-speak' happens. He has written a sincere letter of apology to Mr. Berger. I believe it's time to accept that, and move forward. Eric has been a good neighbor to all of Stoughton for many years.

Funny Angie? You are as ignorant as Eric. Glad he sent an apology and know he has been a good employee, but people just don't come up with a comment and say it one time. For this comment to be made at his place of employment I am sure this is a comment he uses on occasion and now he has said it to the wrong person. This mentality still exists and for you to say it was a joke is also ignorant - how is this a joke? Nobody shold take a comment like this lightly.

Angie, Just goes to show you that even with the protections afforded you in the First Amendment, one is not necessarily entitled to spew what ever language/speech they chose without any repercussions. Just as your post was removed, so too could have been your colleagues job. I suspect that due to his history with the company and seemingly sincere regret and apology,D'Angello's CHOSE to keep him on.

Some say you shouldn't judge someone by the company they keep, but I can't help feel that Eric is going through a second round of judgement based on your posts. You've got a lot of growing to do.

When expressing an opinion, doing so in a civil wmanner adds creditability to what you're trying to get across to others. Often times my opinions, or statements, are opposite others. Often times I try to add some spice to what others say. I always try to be civil and respect their opinions(although some may disagree). There are always more than one side to a story or idea. We should all try to absorb others thoughts and respond in a way we would like people to respond to us.

Thank you once again, Mark for bringing to light a serious incident such as this to the public's attention.

Sad to say, Angie's comments to "not be so sensitive and that derogatory/anti-semetic remarks like this are made by everyone" are just typical of the way some people unfortunately view anti-Semitism in and of itself. It doesn't affect them so it must be a joke or shouldn't be taken seriously. On the contrary.

The employer's comments were made in a public establishment, not at a comedy club and not in someone's home. Granted an apology was thankfully made and publicized but regardless of how and when and where it is expressed, it is NO joking matter. Angie's ignorance is no excuse for her stupidity and her comments while hiding behind her spouting "freedom of speech" just adds fuel to the fire. A little knowledge and education goes a long way, Angie. Might take the time from your misguided beliefs and try it some time. Remember this: THERE IS NO PLACE FOR HATE and certainly not in Stoughton!!!

By the way, for the record, we used to stop in at that particular D'Angelos on a number of occasions...we will now choose to go to other franchises in the area. That is our freedom of consumer choice.

Angie- you may have taken classes but you have a lot to learn, you don't get it, get with the times, there is no place for hate and Stoughton residents do not tolerate your mentality. This is a great town with great residents, get on the same page and read up on Anti-Semitism, it is no joke. Are you for real? I find myself asking why I even waste time responding to your post but feel so strongly that your opinions are inappropriate and your other responses have convinced me that you are clueless- and the fact that one post was deleted for inappropriate language takes away any guess work about who and what kind of person you are.

I'm glad to see that Eric's comment, and subsequent apology, resulted in this discussion of how inappropriate it was in the first place. In these politically-correct times, sometimes we tend to overreact. I think Mr. Berger handled himself with class from the start, and I give him credit for accepting the apology and putting it behind him. Happy New Year everyone!

Angie: Question: What will name calling get you? If people disagree with you, as you said "say as you wish, i'll say as I wish". Let it rest, or respond in an appropriate manner so you're thoughts have some credence. When you resort to name calling, when people disagree with you, it shows that you may be intolerant to others points of view. Remember, there is always more than one point of view. Our country was built on this. Compromise, and the ability to do so, is now lacking and we are suffering because of it. Try not to be so emotional, take a breath. If this doesn't help, maybe, just maybe, you should seek Anger Management counceling. You really seem very angry that people don't see your point of view. Its not healthy.

I dont need anger management, i am not angry at all just my point of view as you said but when some jerk off tells me i am uneducated i will get defensive for myself. Now just remember what i said at the beginning of all this i am standing up for a friend who no one else on here obviously knows him as well as i do and he obviously didnt mean what he said!

Well said Fiscal...couldn't have said it any better...as for Angie...you can only shake your head and hope she and others that consider anti-semitic remarks a joke wake up to the harsh reality that it is neither tolerated nor acceptable...I guess learning from their "education" only works for some...

As the old saying goes, "Denial" is not just a river in Egypt.

Sorry Mark...this has nothing to do with being politically correct. The comment was ignorant and the defense of the argument is just as ignorant. There should be no tolerance of the use of derogatory terms for any race, religion or nationality.
