The Stoughton High athletic community gathered Wednesday evening, March 28 in the SHS auditorium to celebrate the end of the winter sports season.
Thirty-one student-athletes were honored for their performance on and off the field this season.
Awards for team MVP, sportsmanship and scholar athlete were presented (full list of award winners below).
The players on each respective team vote for the team MVP and for the sportsmanship recipient. The Scholar Athlete award goes to the athlete on the team with the highest grade point average.
Eleven athletes in seven different sports were also named Hockomock League All-Stars. The Hockomock coaches vote for League All-Stars.
The 2011-2012 winter season proved to be one of the most successful in recent memory for Stoughton High teams.
Of the 93 teams in Division 2 high school boys’ basketball in Massachusetts, Stoughton High was one of the final four left standing, finishing the season at 20-5 and winning the D2 South Sectional championship and advancing to play Brighton in a D2 state semifinal at the TD Garden.
The Stoughton High girls’ basketball team improved from 5-13 a year ago to 13-7 this season, earning a trip to the postseason tournament.
The SHS cheerleaders came in second at states and then came in ninth in the nation at Nationals in Orlando.
The SHS Hockey team was one of just three teams to receive the James F. Mulloy Sportsmanship Award. Coach Dan Mark and Captains Larry Hixon and Josh Potter were honored at the TD Garden for the accomplishment.
As for individual accomplishments, Aaron Calixte joined the basketball program’s 1,000-point club as just a junior. He received numerous postseason honors for his role in Stoughton’s tournament run, as did Marcus Middleton and coach John Gallivan.
Andrew Paredes collected a number of accolades for his wrestling success. “Paco” came in second in the state wrestling tournament in the heavyweight division and came in fourth at the New England Championships. He’s competing at Nationals this weekend.
Jade Paul set the school record in the 600-meter event (1:35.95) and competed at states and at New Englands.
Nick Green turned in the best two-mile time by a Stoughton runner in more than a decade.
And, girls’ swim captain Taylor Goodrich qualified for the state meet.
