Earthquake Felt in Stoughton Centered in Southern Maine

The U.S. Geological Survey indicates that the quake was a 4.0 and centered in Southern Maine.

At 7:12 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, an earthquake in Southern Maine resonated all the way to the Boston area, including Stoughton.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was in Lake Arrowhead, ME, about 20 miles west of Portland, ME, and registered a 4.0 on the Richter Scale (initial reports indicated a 4.6).

The epicenter was about 92 miles from Boston.

Twitter and Facebook reports indicate that the effects were felt in Massachusetts and New Hampshire as well.

The Stoughton Fire Department did not report any injuries or damage in town, however.

Still, Stoughton residents reporting feeling a "rumbling" or "shaking" sensation.

"I thought my son was shaking my chair then I saw him in the other room!," Mike Mauriello tweeted to Stoughton Patch.

"My whole kitchen was shaking," Patricia Colburn wrote on the Stoughton Patch Facebook page.

The Board of Selectmen meeting went on uninterrupted on the third floor of the Stoughton Town Hall - the quake was not felt up in the Great Hall.

"I think the explosion on my [Twitter] timeline was greater than the actual earthquake," Tyler Bates tweeted to Stoughton Patch.
