ABOUT TOWN: Stoughton Mourns Loss of Cachopa and Gold
Welcome to "About Town with Mark Snyder," a column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what's going on around town. If you see or hear something we could use here, let us know by sending an e-mail to pmpco@aol.com.
CONDOLENCES I: About Town sends condolences to the family of Len Gold, a former member of the Stoughton Redevelopment Authority and former regular on The Local News, hosted by Dick Murphy. Gold had also served as Chairman of the Stoughton Republican Town Committee.
He passed away on Thursday.
“I met Len when we served together on the Stoughton Redevelopment Authority. He was an incredibly moral and honest man. I always knew he could be counted on to do the right thing no matter what the price," current School Committee member Deborah Sovinee said.
"I enjoyed seeing him around town after we each left the SRA. He was thoughtful, spiritual and a good, decent man. My condolences to his family.”
Murphy, when contacted by About Town said, "I thought very highly of Lenny. He was occasionally on my radio and TV show and was as genuine guy. He spoke his mind on every topic. He was a fine individual and used to call me his favorite Democrat. He was very loyal to the Republican Party. He was a very moral guy and we're going to miss him."
Bill Klein, who served on TV panels with Gold, said, "He was an utterly honest person, which is more than most people. He was a sports writer, and had ownership in a horse. He was a season ticket holder for the Red Sox. He was brutally honest, and some people didn't like that. Sports was big in his mind. He was a linchpin in the Republican party in this town. He stood up for his beliefs and was deeply religious. We were very good friends."
Gold was the loving father of Lise O’Malley and her husband Peter of Basking Ridge, NJ and Adam Gold of NV. Cherished grandfather of Chloe, Isabel, Sara and William.
He very much missed his late brother, Edward Gold. He was the former husband of Ildi (Vankai).
Services were held at Schlossberg Solomon Memorial Chapel in Canton Friday morning. There will be a memorial observance at his late residence following the burial through Friday at sundown. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Shaloh House, 50 Ethyl Way, Stoughton, MA 02072.

CONDOLENCES II: To former Police Chief Manny Cachopa on the loss of his beloved mother, Constance "Connie" Cachopa, who lived for 62 years in Stoughton.
She was the loving wife of the late Manuel G. Cachopa to whom she was married to for over 57 years. She is survived by her four children: Manuel J. Cachopa and his wife Arline of Stoughton, Mary E. McCole and her husband Gary of Easton, Julianne Cachopa of Stoughton, and David Cachopa and his wife Elizabeth of Raynham.
Mrs. Cachopa was raised and educated in Madeira Island, Portugal. Connie was employed as an assembler at Datel Systems in Mansfield for over twenty years.
She was a member of the Stoughton VFW Women’s Auxiliary and was also an active and current member of the Portuguese National Club in Stoughton, where she held various offices, which included both secretary and treasurer.
Her funeral Mass was held Thursday in a packed Immaculate Conception Church.
Arline Cachopa tells About Town that the "so many residents came to pay their respects. It was heartwarming. And, special thanks to the Stoughton Police Department for all their help."
The Wake, which had twenty minute wait times, was held at Sheehan Funeral Home. Many in the community came to pay their respects to Connie and the Cachopa family.
