ABOUT TOWN: Four Arrested After Brawl Breaks Out at Stoughton Baby Shower
A brawl broke out a baby shower at Club Luis de Camoes on Porter Street late Saturday night with four people getting arrested, including one juvenile.
BABY SHOWER TURNS INTO BRAWL: A baby shower at Club Luis de Camoes on Porter Street Saturday night turned into a full-fledged brawl that took 20 police officers nearly an hour to quell. Four people ended up getting arrested, including one juvenile.
A Stoughton Police detail officer was working the 9 p.m. to midnight baby shower on Jan. 12, when a fight broke out inside the club. The officer called in backup, and at 11:38 p.m, there was a full brawl in progress that had spilled outside the building.
Executive Officer Robert Devine told me that the time the incident occurred was of benefit to the police. "We had our midnight shift coming in, so we had more bodies that we'd normally have."
Devine said that four officers and two supervisors from the 4 p.m. - midnight shift, three officers and one supervisor from the midnight - 8 a.m. shift, and the detail officers were on scene.
"The behavior of the party-goers was despicable," Devine told About Town. "We were more worried about the children there than their parents. The officers that responded could not have handled it any better than they did. It was supposed to be a baby shower. They should really be ashamed of themselves."
Arrested were:
- Paulo Pires Depina, 24, of 36 Ash St. in Brockton. He was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, and Assault & Battery on a Police Officer
- Aderito Lopes DeAndrade, 22, of 607 North Main St. in Brockton. He was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Obstruction of Justice, Resisting Arrest, and Assault & Battery on a Police Officer
- Patrick Cardoso Lopes, 24, of 298 North Warren Ave. in Brockton. Lopes was tasered during the arrest by Stoughton Police. He was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, Assault & Battery on a Police Officer, Obstruction of Justice, and Witness Intimidation.
- A 14 year old juvenile from Brockton was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct, Obstruction of Justice, Resisting Arrest, and Assault & Battery on a Police Officer.
Devine said that the situation was under control at 12:20 a.m. Sunday.
Police Chief Paul Shastany told About Town, "based on preliminary reports, it doesn't look like the fault of the police. It just got out of control."
Devine said that he was greatful for the help from the Massachusetts State Police, the Norfolk County Sheriff's office, and police from Canton, Easton and Randolph.
"It gave us a total of 20 officers," he said. "We knew it was at the point where we needed additional help. We couldn't have gotten the situation under control without the help of these other departments who provided us with assistance."
There were no serious injuries of any police officers, according to Devine, "only some minor bumps, scratches and bruises."
As far as the party-goers, the Stoughton Fire Department provided them assistance, as soon as the area was safe for them to proceed, according to Devine.
"The situation was just chaotic," he said. "We have no figures on injuries to the parties there. There were chairs and bottles thrown. It was bad."

I live right next to the club I had front row seats. Something needs to be done about this club. Every weekend there is a problem and the cops need to be called. No one seems to care about the residents in the surrounding areas. This fight lastnight was completely out of control. And they should be ashamed of themselves. There had to be about 20 children there between the ages of newborn to about 8 yrs old. I for one am sick and tired of this club getting away with this behavior. I know they aren't directly to blame, but they need to start hiring some kind of bouncers or something. I have children who every weekend get woken up because people do not know how to contain themselves. And the underage drinking that goes on at those parties is outrageous. Like I said I live right there. All I have to do is stand on my back deck and watch it all unfold. I hope this is the wake up call the town needs to finally do something about this issue. I think the local media needs to be involved.

that is a lie, Check the police log. the police are not called there every weekend and i do not recall the last time they were. Check the police log and you will be able to confirm this very easy.

The club is not to blame here, this was a private party who rented the hall for a party. The club leadership has a policy in place to have a police detail present to prevent things like this from happening. The blame is on the people who don't know how to control themselves!

Exactly. Several have suggested it is not the club's fault, but it is their responsibility to maintain a law abiding status. There is a reason particular venues are selected by the consumer. I think the BOS needs to review the licensing and keep the club on it's toes in the very least.

Traditionally, baby showers are held in the home of a female relative of the parents-to-be, and cake and tea are served, in the afternoon. Only women are invited to attend. Very pleasant and civilized. Once you hold this event in a club at night, invite men and serve alcohol - well, I guess this is what happens.

These people are clearly scum. Having a baby shower with a lot of children at this time of night and then getting drunk and causing a riot where so many are arrested. The parents of that 14 year old must be real proud of the child they raised. Send these people back to Brockton where they belong.

The club does night time baby showers all the time and every single one has ended in a fight. This was the worst one so far. But I have always asked the same question who has a baby shower till midnight. And what parent in their right mind brings their infants to that kind of party with all that drinking. I have so much to say about that club, they don't care who they rent to as long as they get their money. Any ideas on who I can talk to about getting this situation with the club under control. I have lived here for almost 9 yrs, and five of those yrs have been every weekend of fights and police.

Theresa, you are certainly not obligated, but why not tape your observations and approach the BOS with your documentation. You'd be doing yourself and the community a favor.

Even though none of those arrested are from Stoughton, our town is the only one mentioned in the TV news reports. The incomplete reporting makes Stoughton look bad....... :-(

As usual the "classy" citizens of Brockton making fools of themselves. Those "parents" should be ashamed.

Something needs to be done about this club. The club claims that this is the first time that they have a had a problem. If they check the police logs from the past five yrs they will see this club is trouble. The media should have talked to the surrounding neighbors. But I am not going to rest until something is done about this. I live twenty feet from where some of the fighting takes place pretty much every weekend.

Again; document your observations and approach the BOS if the police are not mitigating the activity to your liking. Video is easy and cheap.

Stoughton USE to be a nice town to bring up and raise your children. What the heck happened over the years? My daughter, son-in-law, and 2 beautiful grandchildren are about to move far away from what was once a nice town to another part of the country. Thank you, Brockton, for making Stoughton uninhabitable and only making it an addition to your "lovely city".....and thank you for making MY family turn their backs and run.....................

I'm not originally from Stoughton, and I'm hearing all this bad stuff about brockton. But the part of Stoughton I live in is near the club and also considered the ghetto of Stoughton. This part of town consists of people from Stoughton and some outsiders. You can't blame one town for another's down falls. You can blame the bad influences or the drugs or the alcohol. But I don't think its fair to blame another town. No I am nor originally from Brockton, but I have family there and they r very nice and decent people. There are bad people every where u go, but u can't blame a whole town. I'm just saying

Wow. Blame Brockton for a fight? Why not just say its because they're not white. That's what you really mean. FYI some cultures (Hispanics, Cape Verdeans, African Americans, and more) think a birth should be a celebration! A party even! I don't condone the 4 people who got arrested and their actions, but not everyone who does something than what you know to be the norm is "wrong" or "ridiculous" or "outrageous". I am not from Brockton, but I live there currently. I've been to plenty of family parties and events at that club - none of which resulted in any violence. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but can we relax with all these sweeping generalizations and overly dramatic statements?

Neither the club nor town are to blame, it's the four people who chose to act like animals that are to blame. Shame on them for not only allowing an argument to escalate into an all out brawl but doing it in front of the children is absolutely disgusting.

Joan.. stupid, classless, unruly and disgusting behavior has nothing to do with color, race or sex... The people at that party are crude, classless, individuals..not because of their color or sex, but because of their actions... not everything is about race... stupid has many colors, races, creeds and sexes....

I'm a member of Club Luis de Camoes and when we usually have parties we are not a rowdy crowd we like to have fun . These people are to blame for their own actions. The people who live within 20 feet of the club chose to live there and should not complain I mean you are living right next to a club what can you expect....JUST SAYING

We do live near a club, you are right Jackie, but we do not live near a night club. There is clearly a difference. You are a member of this club, you are not here at 1am when the parties let out to be woken up by people yelling, car stereos being blasted, horns beeping, and it does happen a lot more than people think. Take last night for example, i was woken up by people outside yelling, blasting their music, arguing with each other. So yes i do have a right to complain when I'm trying to sleep and have to get up early for work the next day. Maybe the members should stay late and witness for themselves what happens after they leave.
