1. Candlelight Vigil for Shayla Lutz

The Hansen Elementary School PTO has organized a candlelight vigil to honor the life and memory of Shayla Lutz, the three-year-old Stoughton girl who died Friday, September 14 shortly after she was struck by a box truck in front of the Hansen School.

The vigil will be held this Friday, September 21 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Hansen School field, behind the building. Candles will be provided.  All members of the Hansen School and Stoughton communities are invited to participate, as are family and friends of the Lutz family.

2. Stoughton High Football Home Opener

After starting the season with road wins at Holliston and at Taunton, the Stoughton High Football team returns home for its opener, hosting Pembroke, a Division 3 playoff team from a year ago. The game is Friday, September 21 at 7 p.m.

The Stoughton High senior class (Class of 2013) will be running a dunk tank fundraiser during the game.

Senior Class co-advisor Tim Norton will be dunked pregame and in the first quarter; Assistant Principal Hope Fernandes in the second quarter; Assistant Principal Mike O'Neil at halftime and in the third quarter; and new Principal Julie Miller in the fourth quarter.

A single throw is $1; five throws are $3; and 15 throws are $10.

The senior class will also be holding a 50/50 raffle during the game - $2 for one ticket; $5 for three; and $10 for an arm's length worth of tickets.

Regular admission to the game is $6 for adults and $4 for students, but elementary school students will be able to get in for $2 for the home-opener. Those children playing pop warner or flag football who wear their jerseys to the game will be able to get in for just $1 all season.

Gates will open at 6 p.m.

With all do respect, what will the money be used for? Often times when a fund is set up, the money is used for scholarships in that person's name, to build a playground etc.

HELP THE FAMILY OF SHAYLA LUTZ

Hi Michelle, I believe these initial donations will be used to help the family with Shayla's funeral and burial fees - not many people have life insurance for three year olds and this was the case with Shayla (I have heard that funeral home costs were around 10,000, I don't know about the burial plot but those are typcially are around $3000, I don't believe Shayla has a head stone, the family has been staying in a hotel because the media was knocking on their door at all hours, and I am sure the list goes on to why they need financial help at this time. Shayla's parents are also young and I doubt in this economy have a lot of extra money floating around so I think people just want to help the family at this point. I am sure that they are not able to work at this point and may need to be out of work for some time for obvious reasons. The Stoughton PTO set-up the fund so I don't know if a scholarship was put in place but right now I think it is about helping the family but feel free to reach out to the Stoughton PTO and ask your question and suggest ideas.
I am just promoting the fund because I think the last thing they should have to worry about in a time like this is how they will pay for all of this and it may provide some comfort for their family.
Frankly, your question offends me as I don't care what they use the money I donated for and I bet most people with a heart feel the same way as me. I hope they get enough money to build their own playground in their back yard!

My understanding is that the fund is set up so that the family can access the money at any time, for whatever purpose they choose. There is no particular "goal" or "project" at this time, but simply monetary support for the family.

I will be happy to contribute but it seems that all of the funeral expenses should be covered under the auto insurance company from the person that struck this little girl, that is why we pay auto insurance, even if he isn't found to be at fault, his insurance company is responsible for these expenses and should not at all come from the family. Additionally, it seems that the town should also be picking up what ever the driver's insurance company doesn't since there was NO crossing guard...

Michelle you should be ashamed of yourself. Why don't you take just 5 minutes and put yourself in the shoes of this family. If you're so concerned about where the money is going, you have the freedom to choose not to donate.
